Science tempers fears on climate change
September 02, 2006 http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,20867,20332352-601,00.html
THE world’s top climate scientists have cut their worst-case forecast for global warming over the next 100 years.
A draft report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, obtained exclusively by The Weekend Australian, offers a more certain projection of climate change than the body’s forecasts five years ago.

For the first time, scientists are confident enough to project a 3C rise on the average global daily temperature by the end of this century if no action is taken to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

The Draft Fourth Assessment Report says the temperature increase could be contained to 2C by 2100 if greenhouse gas emissions are held at current levels.

In 2001, the scientists predicted temperature rises of between 1.4C and 5.8C on current levels by 2100, but better science has led them to adjust this to a narrower band of between 2C and 4.5C.

The new projections put paid (Australian lingo :-) ) to some of the more alarmist scenarios raised by previous modelling, which have suggested that sea levels could rise by almost 1m over the same period.

The report projects a rise in sea levels by century’s end of between 14cm and 43cm

Yes Garth, “Let’s hope the Conservative environmental action plan is all that we need” and no more!

The comments made by Ms. Ambrose in the previous weeks have led me to believe I will be disappointed by the anouncement today. Maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

A decent green plan and a vote for the status quo on SSM and the Cons may keep a lot of the red vote they captured.

A strike out today could cause some serious problems for Harper…I guess there is always the fact that Iggy has a gift for putting his feet in his mouth to fall back on..

#3 Adam on 10.10.06 at 11:02 am

Oh I forgot this.

I’m not a fan of Harper or Ambrose but bringing back mandatory efficiency targets for automobiles is the right thing to do. Piss on Dalton and Buzz. People aren’t going to stop buying cars. Anyway, I like to criticize so I guess I should congratulate too.

as long as the plan stops us from sending our money to Iceland or Russia under Kyotofraud then that is good enough for me.

Why isn’t this being released in the House of Commons? Why is this conservative government constantly doing an end run around Parliament?

#6 jerry on 10.10.06 at 12:39 pm

Robert

1. The people of Canada are more important to the Conservatives than the flakes sitting in the house for question period!

or

2. There isn’t enough liberals attending to make it worthwhile.

or

3. Who cares about Taliban Jack, word has it he is about to run for the Afganistan parliament. He could be high on “legal” drugs all the time!

:-)

Robert, This is not being done in the House of Commons because the fraser valley is the perfect backdrop for smoggy air. It has got to be one of the sickest sites people can see. looked really nice when I flew in from Calgary yesterday. Oh how I love to see grey haze blanketing over a beutiful city. We have even had auto emmisions tests for over 12 years so I am not sure what the government will be offering in their green approach or whatever they are calling it this week.

#8 Martin on 10.10.06 at 3:53 pm

Feel sorry for you Garth as:

a) You didn’t get anywhere near what you wanted.

- AND –

b) From past experiences you know your boss won’t let you present any dissapproval.

#9 Frank on 10.10.06 at 4:05 pm

From Canoe.ca ….

`The latest part of the Conservatives’ long-awaited strategy focuses more on smog than on global warming and it will be at least a year before the government has settled on targets…….

The government plans to spend a year consulting with industry and the provinces with the aim of coming up with short-, medium- and long-term targets…“

Just a little more hot air….but did we really expect anymore form Pretty Rona. Going on 8 months in office and this is the best she can come up withÉ

#10 Frank on 10.10.06 at 4:11 pm

From Canoe.ca ….

“Last week, Environment Minister Rona Ambrose told the Commons’ environment committee that the Liberals spent “at least $100 million” buying the credits.

But earlier Tuesday, her office said that list was for the Canada Climate Change Development Fund, a separate program, and the Liberals didn’t spend a penny purchasing the carbon credits. ”

So Pretty Rona…please tell us…was it $100 million or ‘not a penny’. But then again, when you are so pretty, who expects you to not get confused over such minor details.

Who out there wants to wager a dollar that Pretty Rona was really a blond in a previous lifetime? Rona can change the hair color but there’s not much she can do about that other little issue…..

#11 jerry on 10.10.06 at 5:07 pm

Well Robert, you get your way, next week in the house of commons they will announce the first part.
Aren’t you glad the lieberals are out. With them you could expect a 13 year wait plus!
I am sure glad frank is on our side “Looks like global warming isn’t a problem after all. Pretty Rona said so” I would agree with him, that global warming isn’t a problem and YES she sure beats a ugly lieberal!
All kidding aside franke, this is Canada, unless you are a visable minority with a disability, are pro abortion and SSM, don’t expect anybody to pay attention to you.

#12 Catherine on 10.10.06 at 5:25 pm

Frank, why are you so bigotted against blondes? Does your mother know about your problem with blonds?

I’m actually pleased with the announcement. At last, we have a government who understands that actions do speak louder than words.

The facts are the government is actually investing in techno R&D, and green infrastructure, and bringing in mandatory legistlation. Much better than the usual yappers.

Just because some talking head mouths “k-y-o-t-o” and shovels 10+ BILLION (that is 1 million thousands) tax dollars to China out the back door, doesn’t mean that it’s a good plan and a good investment.

Did anyone catch our lovely Jane Taber on Duffy Live today? Me detects that she has lost her objectivity (if she even had any).

#13 Ed Brooks on 10.10.06 at 6:37 pm

Going on 8 months in office and this is the best she can come up with

and compared to what the Liberals came up with and did in 13 years in office.

I’ll wait until the plan is revealed in the House of Commons before I rush to judgment. Heaven forbid Frank missing an opportunity to belittle someone because of their looks.

#14 Charley on 10.10.06 at 7:37 pm

I am very anxious to hear all of the details of this Clean Air Act that will be introduced into parliament next week, finally some actual legislation regarding the environment (I don’t think there has been any since Mulroney, the “Greenest” MP, was in power!!).

I was relieved to hear NO mention of the scam that is called Kyoto (impossible targets and wealth transfer, not my idea of an environment plan!).

The New Government’s environment plan will not only reduce ALL greenhouse gases (and not just CO2) but will aim to clean up our air too (saving us some health care $$ I’m sure!!). I guess Prime Minister Harper, having suffered from asthma himself as a child, can easily see the many benefits from this approach.

I look forward to more environmental legislation like this in the coming months (clean water I hope is next!).

There will always be those in the opposition that will say we are doing too little or going too far but it’s pretty rich to start critizing even before the details have been announced and really quite pathetic to resort to making personal attacks on the Environment Minister (what are you, Frank, 12??!!).

The Liberals had 13 years and 6 BILLION dollars and did absolutely nothing, in fact things got much worse!! Let’s see what we come up with in only 8 MONTHS!!

#15 Judy on 10.10.06 at 8:47 pm

What did it cost us to send the P.M. and 3 Ministers to West Coast to announce that there will be an announcement in the House next weeK?
Made in Canada , you say? Sounds like the Americans ‘Clear Sky” plan to me -that only helped add more pollution.
Guess if you want “intensity” based targets you will be forever friends with the “tar sands” execs.

#16 Judy on 10.10.06 at 9:45 pm

Charely: You also seem to be jumping the gun. How do you know how effective this “plan” is, if you don’t know the details?
And Rona lied-Liberals did not spend 100 million dollars “buying credits”-she is deliberately misleading the public with false information. She better fire her advisors or read the material herself.

How come no one on the left is ever this funny? David Zucker should do commercials more often! :)

#18 KPK on 10.10.06 at 10:01 pm

I can’t believe I’m agreeing with Judy. If Harper was serious, he would use existing environmental legislation to get the job done. Waiting 5 years for a new act doesn’t cut it. Neither does using does using energy intensity as a strategy for reducing GHGs. It’s a proven failure. This is what Canadians waited 8 months for? Harper should resign. I’m a disappointed and angry “green” conservative today.

#19 KPK on 10.10.06 at 10:05 pm

P.S. If Britain’s oil industry can reduce it’s green house gases to 10% above 1990 levels in 3 years than so can ours. Enough with the B.S.

Catherine
Did anyone catch our lovely Jane Taber on Duffy Live today? Me detects that she has lost her objectivity (if she even had any).

I couldn’t believe it! It was almost like she had to much to drink or was high on drugs.

I was reading some stuff about judy’s friends earlier.

GORE: CIGARETTE SMOKING ‘SIGNIFICANT’ CONTRIBUTOR TO GLOBAL WARMING

Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore warned hundreds of U.N. diplomats and staff on Thursday evening about the perils of climate change, claiming: Cigarette smoking is a “significant contributor to global warming!”

Then, Gore had his staff opened a stack of cardboard boxes to begin selling his new book

Now second-hand smoke is melting the polar caps. This is getting more and more bizarre.

Don’t Believe the Hype

Al Gore is wrong. There’s no “consensus” on global warming.
The real “inconvenient truth” is that a false consensus is formed by excluding dissenters from the policy debate. This is done through the politics of grant-making, especially by large foundations. Dissidents, identified as such by their grant proposals, are denied funding. In turn, professional publications deny such researchers a credible forum in which to publish. And then the dissenters are asked to produce peer-reviewed articles. Thus is created consensus through “perpetual repetition.”

Speaking of Taliban Jack, some thoughts occured to me over the weekend concerning his stance on Afganistan. I watched a supremely wonderful movie named Hotel Rwanda. At the beginning of the movie, the foreign troops came in and evacuated their own people, leaving the country to sort itself out. The heroic efforts of the hotel manager and those of others convinced the world to step in and stop the genocide.

If our troops leave Afganistan, as Taliban Jack and his supporters wish to see happen, the country will revert to its previous state. Here is where I become confused.

Taliban Jack and his people purport to be on the side of the oppressed. No argument there, right?

Well, the Taliban oppressed one-half of the population – the women of Afganistan. Women were beaten by the religious police, were restricted in their movements, restricted in their mode of dress, kept barefoot and pregnant in their homes, prevented from being educated…the list goes on.

So, if all the foreign troops withdraw from Afganistan, the Taliban could very well rise to power and once again oppress one-half of the population.

Is this what Taliban Jack wants? Is he in favour of oppressing women? Oh, I almost forgot – the Taliban is composed of cowardly males who reject women and spend their lives in the company of other men – need I say more? And yet, as far as I know, homosexuality is punishable by death under the Taliban.

Some contradictions seem apparent. One thing is clear, however. Taliban Jack either has no clue about what he is pushing or he is actually a woman-hater and a homosexual-hater – that is, if he supports the return of the Taliban to rule Afganistan.

I am sure that Judy and Robert M can justify TJ’s thinking but, in my mind, it smacks of sheer stupidity and hypocricy on TJ’s part.

#22 Catherine on 10.11.06 at 6:14 am

Did any press geniuses ask the “experts” ask why it would take 5 years to pass any environmental legislation on target emissions?

Is it that the “experts” and their supporters are on the take and want to derail any reduction so that China gets our 10+ BILLION tax dollars?

If TJ (Layton) and his green buddies want to curb CO2, then why is he flying everywhere to his speaking engagements (such as his university speaking stumps). Why not set an example and use existing technologies – like tele-conferencing. Wouldn’t less use of airplane fuel put downward pressure on “Alberta’s tar sands” fuels? He is such a hypocrite!

#23 Judy on 10.11.06 at 10:57 am

Catherine: Once again, I agree. However you should have included P.M. Harper and the 3 ministers in your criticism. They all flew out to B.C. to make a very important announcement. The announcement was that there will be an announcement in the House next week.
Talk about wasted time and energy.

#24 Catherine on 10.11.06 at 4:34 pm

Judy – my understanding Mr. Harper had other duties on the west coast. So, if it was only to announce their commitment to the environment plan, then, I would have more critism. Tele-conferencing should be used more – even for their committee meetings. Why do witnesses have to be flown to Ottawa for a 15 – 60 minute presentation?

BTW: does anyone have a problem with NASA and it’s space flights? A hell of lot of fuel being used.

AND – why isn’t TJ (Layton) complaining about North Korea and its environmental damage it does with its testings? Oh yeah – it’s not “Bush”.
