The Income Trust Disaster
MP Garth Turner calls Town Hall to discuss
impact on investors and the economy
In the wake of the Harper government’s disastrous decision to tax income trusts – after promising during the last election such a tax would never take place – the results have been brutal on both investors and Canada’s business community.
– Hundreds of thousands of investors have seen the market value of their income trusts reduced by tens of billions of dollars. Experts estimate that individual Canadians have lost about $25 billion from their savings, many of them retired, with not ability to recoup those funds.
– Foreign investors have poured in to buy up Canadian income trusts after the government’s surprise tax reduced their value dramatically. In the last three months, ten trusts worth billions of dollars have sold, taking those business revenues out of Canada. As a result, the government will collect zero taxes from them, opposed to the taxes they were collecting from income trust investors.
Observers around the world are calling Jim Flaherty’s move to tax trusts as “one of the worst decisions ever made by a person in a position of monetary authority.â€
“The reasons to see why Flaherty made a giant mistake are obvious,†says Halton MP Garth Turner, a well-known personal finance author and commentator in private life. “He has caused the greatest drop ever in the savings of individual Canadians through this one action, as well as wounding our economy, and none of us should just let it happen without a fight.â€
To discuss potential solutions to this situation, income trust investors and concerned citizens are invited to a special Town Hall meeting with MP Turner:
Thursday April 26
7:30 pm
Boyne Community Centre, Milton
(NE corner Britannia Road and Highway 25)
For more information, please contact Garth Turner’s office at (905) 693-0166. For more on the income trust situation, visit Turner’s web site and blog at www.garth.ca.

I cannot be there Garth – but as I have said before – go get ‘em! And thank you for getting the word out.
The income trust boondoggle is just one nail in Harpo’s coffin. Since taking office, this government has shown no economic leadership or vision. The Liberal government under Chretien did a brilliant job of creating wealth in Canada (we went from crippling annual budget deficits, high interest rates and an unemployment rate of 12% to balanced budgets, low interest rates and the lowest unemployment rates in 30 years!). This current crop of Bush-league neoCONs are too incompetent to run a corner store, let alone a major world economy. The Canadian economy has been costing over the last year and half – and the manufacturing sector has been taking a big hit. Yet, the PM is too busy debating gay marriage, gun control and appointing separatists to key government positions to worry about the economy.
We need a government that pays attention to what’s important. As one American journalist said “Its the economy, stupid”. Instead, we have a government that debates issues which are either dead and buried or, simply not a growing problem, such as gay marriage, gun control, and Quebec Nationhood. This government has repeatedly insulted China, (one of our most important trading partners and a potent source for our economic growth in the future) and all but abandoned the manufacturing sector in Southern Ontario. The sooner we are rid of these twits, the better.
Garth, interesting series of polls have been released lately. Most of them seem to indicate that the wind has gone out of Harper’s sails and that the Liberals are in a statistical tie with the CPC. I think that the Canadian people are starting to wise up to Harper – his days are numbered. Lease, Sean P. Hogan, and all you other CPC pickers of my pocket, start sharpening your knives. You’re going to need them to stab Harper in the back when he loses the next election.
See you there!
Elias, first of all, President George Bush has nothing to do with our politics. 2nd, those issues you mentioned that Harper is busy were already handled, therefore, he wouldn’t be busy with this.
3rd, homosexual marriage should have been dead way before the activists used my tax dollars to take it to the lower courts. And yet, it was already decided in Parliament that one man and one woman was the overwhelming choice. Therefore, no, the issue of homosexual marriage is not dead, by any means. Perhaps you like it to be so, but, it isn’t. As for picking your pocket, I’ve done no such thing, but if you feel the CPC has done that to you, you are definitely able to vote for another party. However, if the vote comes out in a way that you don’t like, you have to live with it, just like everyone else has to. That’s democracy.
As well, a Decima Research poll still puts the CPC in the lead with 34% and the Liberals at 31%.
Any chance that these Town Hall meetings could be live webcasted so those of us outside of the area could watch and participate? I realize there is a LOT of work to hold a TH, but it would be wonderful if a webcast could someday be a reality. Just a something for the wishlist.
Sean, give it up. these cheerleaders (Elias, JCLH, Bill from Muskoka) are all Garth’s alter-egos.

Garth, could you explain what will happen after BCE (and may Telus) get taken private?
The Harpo’s govt want to stop BCE from converting into a trust, so they impose a tax, thereby destroying the whole income trust sector. So now BCE is about to be taken private and then maybe converted into a private trust.
Isn’t it true that the so called tax on income trust is only imposed on the publicly income trusts?
If so, won’t it be completely pointless for the harpo’s govt to impose a tax on income trusts, since the tax itself will only facilitate more conversions into private trusts?
Where are those so-called experts/geniuses (Urquhart, Rosen, Mintz, etc) on income trusts when we need them.
Are they hiding under a rock?
It has long been obvious that Mr. Flaherty is completely out of his element. He simply is not up to the job.
I note Hogan used the term “homosexual marriage”. It correct term is Same Sex Marriage. A Freudian slip it seems ( touch of bigotry here?). Well, my life hasn’t change one bit – I still shop, do my daily chores, etc. exactly the same even though same sex marriages have taken place.
With all the stress and violence in this extremely volatile world or ours and his main concern is SSM?

If Mr. Bush has nothing to do with Canadian Politics it’s only because he’s beyond the beyonds in setting up puppet regimes in places like Afghanistan and Iraq.Mr.Hogan I think you either just awoke from a long coma or some Aliens just returned you from a very distant star.
In case you haven’t heard.George Bush invaded Iraq on a lie.No WMD.Just for starters.

Today in the HofC Mr.O’Conner linked the fact that the Taliban had killed 700 Afghan men to the fact that was why we are there. To protect them, Afghans that is.
Maybe next time he can tell us how many innocent Afghan men, women and children have been killed by NATO since this latest mission began.
And does Stockwell Day get paid extra for trying to be funny.
Garth, any comment on the following? :
“I say this on the record. Some Liberals feel today Mr. Dion should be forced to quit as leader. His deal with Elizabeth May, a social reactionary, is the very last straw. It denigrates the tradition that the Liberals are a national party. Though he was the architect of the Clarity Act, Dion is cynically kowtowing to the decentralists in Quebec; he does not, like his predecessors, speak up for Canada any more.. He refused to support extending the terrorism provisions Bob Rae said were needed to find the Air India terrorists. He is fudging the commitment to fight terrorists in Afghanistan his own government made. He is surrounded by a bunch of control-freaks who will not accept the offers of veteran strategists, who date back to Trudeau, to help with policy. Both Michael Ignatieff and Bob Rae are eminently qualified to succeed him before the next election and I cannot fault their supporters for plotting to dump him before its too late.” – Ray Heard

You hit the nail on the head, Elias.
I echo your thoughts.
Sean: Just as you were told, a statistical dead heat. And Harper has spent millions wooing Quebec for what?? another minority???
And all his blustering and lies and deceits?? Most Canadians are seeing through his thinly veiled contempt for democracy and transparency. The man has proven he will say or do anything for a majority. I , for one, hope he fails.
Sean P. Hogan: do give it up. The gay marriage issue is dead. Even Harpo has abandoned your cause.

Are we not in Afganistan honouring a Nato committment as opposed to a Liberal government directive?
“It denigrates the tradition that the Liberals are a national party.”
Yes we sure want to hold onto tradition, let’s not change anything, it is all working so well in Ottawa (sarcasm)
“Dion is cynically kowtowing to the decentralists in Quebec”
Sure is, he just transfered a ton of fiscal imbalance money to buy some votes…opps sorry that was Harper wasn’t it?
“He is fudging the commitment to fight terrorists in Afghanistan his own government made.”
Oh we should stay there forever, let the Taliban set up in Pakistan, and pick us all off…can’t touch them in there, according to Bushie! We wouldn’t want Canadians to think for themselves.
“He is surrounded by a bunch of control-freaks who will not accept the offers of veteran strategists”
Yessiree….in a changing world we need to go back to the 50 and 60’s…and do things like we used to…guess it’s hard for some people to have vision.
A Conservative couple the Stiles in New Brunswick just crossed the floor to join the Liberals. Reported they had had enough of the Conservative party’s “negative” tone.

Ted Browne, not sure what point you wanted to make, but this is the reason for the website you linked, in the owner’s own words:
http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/intent.htm
“Purpose and Intent of this website:
This website does not suggest that it contains the “truth”. The truth is a combination of all information and all facts relating to a topic. It is therefore unachievable (in my opinion) for anyone to say “I know the truth.”
If you came to this site in search of “the truth” you will be disappointed. That is also true of CNN, FOX , ABC etc. If you came to gather information you may find it a useful resource.”
For all the messaging presented, the truth is not easy to determine.

Well then that means that the CPC is yet again going down in their numbers from a couple of weeks ago. Once again all ye faithful Harper followers, he will never get the numbers for a majority.
You just don’t get it do you all ye faithful Harperites.
In today’s mail, I received two copies of an identical political handout entitled Budget 2007 – Support for your family by Canada’s New Government. On the reverse side pointers are given on how to find out more on how Budget 2007 supports my family – which it did not, but that is beside the point.
This flyer – no postage, no government issue notation – was, and I quote “Compliments of Dean Del Mastro, MP”. He happens to be the Conservative MP for Peterborough and I live in London, Ontario. What gives? Who is paying for the distribution of this handout? If this is electioneering, who is paying for it – better not be the taxpayers. The only indication of anything was ‘Canada’s New Government’. I continue to be very unimpressed with PMSH and his ‘new’ government – can’t wait for them to be the ‘former’ government.

Didn’t win in Vietnam and didn’t learn anything while they were at it.Other notable causes were Lebanon and Somalia, two more defeats. Now it’s Iraq another defeat in the making. And that brings me back to Afghanistan. The Russians couldn’t do it.Of course the US backed what we now know as the Taliban to insure the Ruskies failed.
Yep,it,s a NATO mission and we are part of it,committed till who knows when.If we can rely on History the ones who should have been committed are still in Ottawa.
Concerning a “Budget 2007 Invests in Seniors” mailer received from my Conservative MP.
Dear Mr. VanKesteren,
While Mr. Harper was the leader of the opposition, he used mailers to guage the views of Canadians. In all but one, I told him he was on the wrong track.
Today, I received you Budget 2007 Invests in Seniors mailer.
1. How are you putting $1 billion back in seniors pockets? Given Mr. Flaherty’s Income Trust flip-flop and the policy for this tax, seniors lost far more.
2. Raising the RRSP age limit to 71. This means seniors are not mandated to take minimum amounts of retirement savings for 2 additional years. If they take the money out of an RRSP or a RRIF, they are still taxed at their marginal rate. Again, this provison does not actually put money back into seniors pockets, it only allows them to delay 2 years before they must start paying tax on their retirement savings.
3.$35 million to combat elder abuse and fraud. Much needed programs. I await to see if this will be more successful than you child care spaces strategy.
4. Pension Income Splitting for seniors and pensioners. This was not a Conservative Party Idea, but one pushed for by now Liberal Garth Turner. So now your taking credit for someoneelses idea.
Mr. Harper is still on the wrong track.
PS. Not only is Mr. Harper on the wrong track, but there’s a freight train called an election coming in the opposite direction. We just have to wait for the opposition parties to get their houses in order and a confidence motion will be defeated.
Messrs. Dion, Layton and Duceppe get a move on, Steve needs to be shown the door.
By Details on 04.17.07 4:44 pm
The point of the website was to inform. It’s up to each individual to determine what’s truth. What this site does is basically give you information that isn’t reported by the main stream media. But in order to that ya gotta go inside the site. You only got to the first page.Your choice.
“Messrs. Dion, Layton and Duceppe get a move on, Steve needs to be shown the door.”
The longer they wait, the more hesitant and indecisive they appear to be. I have been saying this for some time, that the time is long past for words, and that now is the time for actions.
Let’s get on with the election so that the campaign doesn’t drag on and on and on and on.
Ted, not to quibble, but your link first takes the reader to ‘the inside’, where one will read what was intended.
But, it can be interesting to see the reason for a site to exist.
This fellow clearly states that the truth is hard to find, and while he presents what the main media does not always, he admits he doesn’t have all the truth either.
“If you came to this site in search of “the truth†you will be disappointed.”

I just hope it is more than the 10 minutes he spent on the Income Trust Policy!
Sorry to say it folks…I believe the CPC are way in over their heads mixing tax havens with deductible trucker meals and spending time to save us a few cents on ABM fees.
Disneyworld has opened near CPC ATTACK HEADQUARTERS.
Sean Hogan’s only purpose is to play silly partison games (with absolutely no intelligence whatsoever – we can all drink kool-aid and repeat rhetoric.
Hogan is a total waste of time. Wouldn’t know how to debate an issue if he tried.
And, I bet he thinks he impressive – now that’s scary.
Harper finally, yes finally, made reference to the victims of the Virginia shootings. I think he did it because he saw the Tony Blair and John Howard did. Interesting, Britain has banished guns and John Howard, PM Australia, has gun control which was done because of a similar incident Australia had 11 years ago. Howard is one of Harper’s heros so I hope Harper is listening.
The “right to carry arms” in the American constitution was made during the days of muskets, when people needed to hunt for food (no supermarkets then), needed to protect themselves from attacks in the wide open spaces.
I think they need to change that and need to stop answer to the National Rifle Association, U.S.’s biggest lobbyists – are you listening Harper.
I think Dion is waiting for the dust to settle. There appears to be no election in the very near future and he is wise to see how well Mario Dumont is going to be received. He also needs to wait for Duceppe’s next move, if he takes over the leadership of the PQ SD will need a plan to try and attract some of the members of the Bloc and their supporters. I trust him and he will make his move when the time is right.
“The “right to carry arms†in the American constitution was made during the days of muskets, when people needed to hunt for food (no supermarkets then), needed to protect themselves from attacks in the wide open spaces.”
My understanding was that the founding fathers allowed people arms so that they could fight against the government if it became corrupt or oppresive, which was common place at the time. Somethings never change.
Somehow I don’t think the average American citizen would fair too well against the Commander in Chief, so this ammendment has been twisted to mean the right to own guns, period.
How many Colombines and Virginia States do they need before they realise this amendment has to go!
But gun control will not solve every problem. Even with the strict controls in the UK, where gun ownership has never been a right, we had a massacre Hungerford. I believe the shooter used a rifle, not a handgun.

It’s amazing how much damage a govt. can do in such a short time. I hope an election is soon.
But Nike, if they bring on an election, you’ll have to find a new blog to visit.
Careful what you wish for.
One more comment, can you have someone video the meeting and post it.I would love to make it, but can not.
SLG: no disrespect ment here, but the “right to bare arms” was not made to protect the people from wild animals and permit hunting etc. It was specifically designed to permit people the option of armed insurection in the event they could not vote out their government. Your point, however, is well taken. There is a saying amoung American lawyers which points out the hypocracy (insanity?) of the American fascination with guns. It goes like this: “The second amendment (right to bare arms) is carved in stone, while the first amendment (freedome of speech) is a work in progress”. It is true. The US government trys to limit freedome of speech, but lets the “gun nuts” run amok amoung us.
Some of you might say – guns don’t kill people, people kill people (especially if those people have guns, apparently).
Some other people might say that gun owners are level headed and law abiding citizens. I agree, its a well known fact that only one out of a hundred gun owners goes nuts and shoots the other 99.
All in all, I think we start considering an all out gun ban. It isn’t 1776, we don’t have to defend our homes from the mongrel hord, and if we can’t trust the police to protect us, we sure can’t trust our untrained and undesciplened gun toting neighbors.
Obviously, Dan Baril advised you that if you keep on flogging this issue, this is your best chance for re-election.

The Liberals were at the same pol number last time…then Harper lied to millions of seniors on Incoem Trusts and picked up a lot of support. Seniors will now swing back since they were betrayed by Harper’s Lies. Harper is toast. If he does not get a majority his party will boot him.
SLG,
The “right to carry arms†in the American constitution
States a well regulated militia which means in today’s reality the National Guard under the directive authority of the Governor and President.
The NRA is a bunch of paranoid Rambos wanting to play soldier.
Consider ‘Bowling for Columbine’ and why a bank would offer a Weatherby Magnum Rofle for opening an account? Insanity reigns. Like Sean Connery said in ‘The Hunt For Red October’ Buckeroos’!
BTW, I am a combat experience Marine who has Expert ratings in both rifle and pistol, and I still enjoy precision shooting at a range. When I immigrated to Canada I chose to sell the few weapons I had. I do not regret doing so whatsoever.
Make a weapon available to nutbars and you will get Virginia Tech. Couple that with raw capitalism and no social safety net and you will get Virginia Tech. Couple that with the lobbying of the NRA, espeically in Virginia, and you will get Virginia Tech.
Switzerland makes every male age 18 to 65 serve in their home defense force. each has fully automatic rifle and cases of ammunition. If one uses the weapon without authorization the penalty is severe. Yet, they have training, have no interest in conquering the world. So, the question must be asked…Why do such events occur in the U.S.? For the same reasons the streets of Baghdad are ablaze with weaponry…inequality and availability of weapons.
Like the saying goes, and it is true ‘Guns do not kill people…people kill people!’ The key is not arming people who are nutbars, or otherwise clueless. it means restricting the availability and sale of weapons. It means regulating firearms to a safe use, as in storing them at a range, in a safe and locked state which we used to call an armoury! Almost every village, town, and city in canada still has them. They are not used for that purpose anymore, but should be. Limited and authorized access, same as the military uses.
Hey, we can hear you, no need to shout.
And it is loser not looser!

Homosexual marriage is very accurate, unless you can point out why it isn’t??? Be my guest, I await your response to these questions.
Judy, I disagree with Harper spending on Quebec, just like you do. The thing is, the Libs have been doing the very same thing, therefore, Harper is just acting like a power-hungry Liberal.
Elias, its only dead for those who don’t want to revisit. That’s fine, but, there are many people who want it revisited. Therefore, they have that choice. As I have stated before, why wasn’t this declared dead when Parliament overwhelmingly voted for one man and one woman?
PJW, I’ve noticed that so far when you are questioned on your comments, you don’t provide any answers. Mainly, I’ve noted that all you do is insult. I can only conclude that you don’t have an honest reply. Too bad.
Randy, it looks like the Libs are in the same position. Therefore, we could have a minority government once again if an election were called now. Time will tell.
SLG, try toning down your rhetoric. Your posts don’t indicate any willingness to discuss or debate. I however, do not use any of those tactics, rather, I provide facts to bolster my opinion.
SLG, just because you disagree with someone’s point of view, doesn’t mean that you should dismiss it so outright as you normally do here. Now, can you point out my partisan games??? Just one will do. I’ve asked this of others and so far, no proof. I’m waiting.
