There are not many MPs who command semi-silence when they stand in the House, but Peter Stoffer is one of them. The NDP member for Nova Scotia usually has something worthwhile to say, and his questions are pointed but fair. Stoffer is a tireless advocate of our armed forces, particularly caring about veterans and their families.
Recently the guy has championed the cause of veterans’ widows, drawing Stephen Harper’s embarrassed attention to one woman he promised to help when he was a candidate for prime minister, but whom he appears to have abandoned since. Stoffer has also been fighting for compensation for victims of Agent Orange poisoning at Camp Gagetown in New Brunswick.
While the MP and I have sparred over the issue of party allegiance, and I treat him as an adversary, my respect remains. He is an effective and sincere member of Parliament. We need more cut from the same cloth.

The mark of a TRUE Gentleman and a man of integrity! BRAVO to you!
Peter Stoffer is a great man!
The Liberals have taken a lot of our freedoms away
Garth,
Peter Stoffer mentioned at the end that he was born in Holland and therefore has a special relationship with our veterans. This is something I’ve run into time and time again and I’ve wondered at why born Canadians not have the same level of respect. I mean there is respect but not the instant bounce out of the chair and hug you because you are Canadian type! Or your Dad is. The Dutch wear their hearts of their sleeves when it comes to Canada.
Harper&Co spew out their phony patriotism but obviously when it comes to the real thing they falter yet again. Promises made, promises broken.
Did Steve look that widow in the eye when he made that promise to her? Is her picture part of a photo op of the two of them together? I hope not!
Keep up the good fight Peter Stoffer!
Very well said, Garth.
