Prior to travelling to Newfoundland next week for a federal caucus meeting, and then heading West for a speaking tour for two weeks, I have stolen away this weekend to my shack on the beach. Last night was monsoon time. The ceiling rained. The wind blew out a window. The dog peed from fear in the bedroom. Very relaxing.
Worst, though, was the apparent frying of my laptop in a surge of power which coursed through ancient wires prior to the total outage. So, this is being written with thumbs, as part of the Berry nation.
I have to travel back for the last of five Town Hall meetings this week in Halton later today. I’ll try to reboot the laptop before coming back to wife, pooch and surf tonight. But meanwhile, kids, amuse yourselves. — Garth

VOTE FOR MMP.
Why change the voting system? Under our antiquated first-past-the-post (FPTP) system, a party can win 40% of the votes, but capture 60% of the seats and 100% of the power. That’s why most major democracies scrapped it last century.

I’ve hear other say the USA have NO intention of leaving Iraq and there are helping destablies the country for these ends. They only what the oil and to dominate the region , militraly.
60% of the ‘remaning’ know oil can be found in the regoin. We’ll be out soon if we keep burning it a present and predicted rates, ‘peak oil’.
Blood for oil is something a sociopath would think was exceptable!

I want to live in an independent
STRONG and FREE, law ruled society inder the Canadian charter of rights and freedoms.
NOT become harmanized with the USA and there partiot act rushed throught congress after 9/11, using the SPP.
I don’t want the Canadian Government to give/sign away there right to make changes for the common good, to the ‘Corporations’ so they can maximise there short term profits.
I want a Canadian Government that will make good long term plans and help it’s people to make the nessassary changes so all will prosper.
Why does PMSH want to become a coloney of the USA with there forien prisons(torture facilities). NO legal and fare court hearing. Just imprisonment.
(Sounds like a fascism dictatorship police state, no longer a free democracy)

The video is called “The History of Oil”. In it he attempts to elucidate on the topic of war, and economic reasons behind wars, with particular reference to oil being a major factor.
Now, I can hear some of you already rolling your eyes saying “Not another conspiracy theory.” In truth, it’s not really a conspiracy theory, but does highlight a major problem that we as a society have… You’ll have to watch the video if you wish to be enlightened.

re: Fluoride that is being added to the
drinking water is NOT good.
(remember whar they useto say about
cigarets,DDT,aspestos,lead,mercury,
agent orange,ect.)
It should be stopped to help keep people healthy.
Saving upfront costs and back end health care costs!
Fluoride wasn’t tested on the human body before they started adding it to the water.
-It reduces IQ if infants drink it.
-Brita filters do not remove it.
-Boiling water only make it more concentrated. (Some ion filters can remove it, but are problamatic since you can’t tell when they stop working.)
-The National Reasearch Council came out with a report on FLuoridated water Nov.9,2006
-incresses uptake of aluminum into the brain. Alsimers connection.
-was used to treat over active tyrodes.
Waht is it doing to normal thyrods.
Why are we having a obisity epidemic?
-make bones brittel, more hip fracture.
-Bone Cancer increase in young men.
-most fluoride added to drinking water is not pharmasutical grade. It’s waste from the phospat industry and contants traces of lead and arsinic!
(It’s indrustial toxic waste)
-The ’so-called safe’ level to drink,
(if you and good kidney function)
is 1PPM in 1 leter perday. They say 4PPM
is to much. Thats not even a 10:1 safty factor! We are Being medicated with out ccontroling the dose. How much water do you drink every day?
Topical application of Fluoride to teeth does seems to help reduce cavities but drinking fluoride is like drinking sunscreen to protect the skin.
Mr. Garth Turner,
While I was out getting the new AL Gore book, Assault on reason, I found copies of book ‘the fluoride deception’
I will pass it on to you or Ester, if you have time to read it in your bizzy skedual.
I read in the National a couple sat, ago
that the supply of fluoride is almost out due to the phospate plant damaged by the hurracan.
I hope this is a way to stop putting it into the water without admiting that it is accually harmfull to people?
Thanks for trying to being an effective MP of everyone.
For anyone else out there who is planing to be a one of Mr. Tuners Town halls. You could ask him to compare his experiance in PMSH cocous to the other government he was in. You will be suprized and inlighten with his responce! (The corporate run media does not always tell the masses what we should all realy here!)
I forgot to add the link to get more information on Fluoride.

You better not have lost that Montebello footage I gave you.
Garth,
NEVER, EVER, have electronics on service without real surge protection, and that means a UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply)with surge protection, and voltage regualtion. The brownout is extremely hard on the circuitry because as the voltage drops the current increases. The On/Off/On is also very damaging. Lightening strikes will usually be blocked by them as well, unless it is direct to your lcoation. then look up and say ‘yes? What may I do for you God?’ LOL
Get an APS UPS at Staples and protect your gear. Same goes for TV’s Sat receivers, any microcomputer based gear.
Sorry to hear of your loss. Invest the $60 to $90 bucks and you will not experience that again.
Have a great weekend Garth. Keep up the great, informative work. !
The economy joins casualties and climate on the Liberal election strategy playbook–Hope for the worst, and then blame it on Harper.
Liberals see opportunity in economic uncertainty
Recent market turbulence has Liberals hoping they can turn economic uncertainty into a political opportunity.
As Grit MPs and senators prepare to meet next week to plot strategy for the fall session of Parliament, the economy has suddenly jumped back onto the political radar screen. Global market upheavals driven by the sub-prime mortgage crisis in the United States have shaken complacency in Canada’s robust and seemingly bulletproof economy.
Jenifer ,
Do you have some new footage???????
I am very interested .

I have a couple of questions about MPP. are there going to be more MPs? If so, how may more, and are they going to be paid the same salary as the regular MPs?
I am concerned about government getting bigger and more expensive. Also these MPs that come off the party list, they still will be voting as told by the leader correct? If so, how does that change anything?
Speaking tour across Canada. You running for PM? Wait till Dion gets wind of this! You really up to running the whole country?
The brownout is extremely hard on the circuitry because as the voltage drops the current increases. The On/Off/On is also very damaging. – Bill Muskoka
You’ve got that right. I’d never seen a brownout until the hydro failure a couple of years ago. And as the power died, the lights turned brown.
I put it down to the electrical distribution on the cheap. First, give me good old English 240V any day. Half the current, less copper in the cables.
Secondly, apart from the really high voltage distribution, eveything else is buried and less suseptable to lightening. Not to mention, there are no transformers littering the street, or hydro poles to be run into.
And you don’t have to replace recepticles and switches every couple of years because they don’t wear out.
BTW. Have you ever noticed that when you install a recepticles with the ground pin on the bottom, the writting is upside down. In the UK. the ground pin shutters the other pins (no kids sticking stuff in like I did before they came that way!) and being ontop, anything dropped between the pins gets grounded before it touches the live.
One problem, a 240V shock gives you a mighty big kick.
Will it matter which party you vote for?
Consider this:

Owzabout it, Garth?
Dion and you, along with a whole group of centrist-based Libs (to form a majority), along with some Greens can take OUR country back from the minority right-wing screwballs now trying desperately to turn it into a dictatorship.
I for one would switch my vote from Green to Libs when it becomes patently obvious that this nation could be a much better, efficiently run and far more environmentally-friendly nation than at present.
By James – Chatham on 08.25.07 3:08 pm
Actually, a brown out does do exactly that. the filaments drop to an almost non-emitting level, hence a very deep red, which is sensed as brown.
Here is the Muskoka, as with most of rural Canada, the power lines are all above ground, although they have now gone to underground for new installations, except where the Canadian shield is present.
Yes, Europe, and most other countries have difefrent electrical standards. The receptacles are vastly different, which is why we have a converter kit that allows us to fit the North American plug into their plug when travelling. You still may need a stepdown transformer unit as in Germany.
Many of the little Wall Wart power transformers have a switch, or automatically changed from 110 (120)VAC to 230-240VAC.
Then there is the video standard differences, which is why most foreign news looks terrible. We use the NTSC, but there is the PAL, and SECAM standards as well.
BTW, it is not the voltage that will kill you, but the amperage. In fact, as little as 1/10 ampere can kill a person. We can take millions of volts at microampere levels, which is why the TASER works. It is between 50-100KV, but the amperage is very low. It disrupts the Central Nervous System, as well as car stereos and amplifiers! Hehehehe!
Got a Boom Boxer problem? Take a TASER, walk by, touch the vehicle, press the trigger, and you will fry all the solid state compoments. Etu Brutus! LOL
If you aren’t shocked, you’re not breathing.
By Frank Frink on 08.25.07 3:25 pm
I assure you I am breathing and I am not shocked.
There has been a major movement away from a belief in democracy by many who form the political and economic establishment. Jean Chretien named a PEI MP to as the contact person for a riding held by a Progressive Conservative MP in this province. This is simply another step in the evolution away from representative democracy.
If you aren’t shocked, you’re not breathing.
By Frank Frink on 08.25.07 3:25 pm

Its only a small current that will kill you, but trust me 240V will give you a bigger kick than 110V. (Also makes it easier for the current). I remember one of my physics teachers had a class of 15 join hands and then discharged a Laydon Jar (capacitor). Those things have KVs but low current. Now that gave us all a kick!
As for the boom boxes … you’re just plain mean, but for those deaf hoodlums with their mega subwoofers … where can I get one? (or maybe law enforcement should be able to fry them for enviromental pollution!)
Interesting new book to read…a fictional novel, but like Dan Brown’s books based on solid knowledge and research. ‘The False Prophets’ by B.J. Boltzauzer, and published by iUniverse.
It is the tale of a New World Order oraganization, headed by White Supremecists whose belief is that the wolrd ‘needs’ their control. The goal? World Domination by using slavery and selective genocide, where spirituality and religion are destroyed to be replaced by the all powerful god of materialism.
Naw, could never happen in this enlightened, civilized age…Right?

Less than that, about 5-6 thousanths of an amp! (5 Milliamps)
I had an electronics professor. On our first day of design he stated, “And of course, whatever you design shouldn’t kill the source!”

When we returned from France this year, I plugged in my hair dryer, which I had bought in France a couple of years ago. Wow, did I get a jolt. Had totally forgotten to switch it over to 110 from 230. BTW, took an old receptacle (different prongs – not sure what its actually called) to France and it didn’t work. Thankfully, we had left one there. Anyway FIL has both 110 & 220 in the basement. He used to work for their Hydro co before they switched everything over to 220 and he did all his wiring in his house – still has a complete electrical/electronics/mechancial workshop for puttering around. Know where my DH learned his basics. Have never seen a more organized & well stocked workshop as my FIL’s.

Hello Bill, Charles here. Interesting book (haven’t read it yet).
Generally, the spiritual beings — those whom everyone meets once our temporary clay bodies have run their course — know this planet as ‘the ashcan of the universe’, because this is where all the garbage happens.
Nevertheless, planet Earth is a great school for each of us to get our lessons and experiences in.
I recall from my Christian days, many moons ago, that somewhere in the New Testament, The Christ says something to the effect that “the meek shall inherit the earth.”
So, if the meek of the earth want to inherit the ashcan of the universe, they are more than welcome to it. This is a great place for a vacation, but I wouldn’t want to live here!
I proved the reality of the continuation of life (which everyone will do) a few decades ago to myself — the seventh heaven in the Qu’uran, the third heaven that St. Paul spoke of and plenty more.
Without being able to prove a single word of what I’m saying, I can guarantee you that we will meet again, just as we have met before and shall meet again.
The stuff that happens down here is no more than the same stuff in a landfill — it’s meaningless, worthless junk.

Make sure you know who your voting for, don’t just vote for a lable. Once a party gets in there leader become ‘king/queen’.
The MP may or may not have any input into government policy. They could be only told what to think, do, and say, like PMSH MP Gang!
Attend candidate meetings and ask questions. Or run for office.
If you join all the partys, you can go to all the meetings, maybe even help to make the world better for everyone in your own small way.

Mr Garth TurnerMP,
Could you have your blog townhall meeting updated for the meetings your doing out west so more people know when and were they can attend.
Garth wants to here whats on your mind,
he does lisen and has a dialoge with everyone. He tells your some of his ideas and decuses topics and issues you are thinking about, but he doesn’t make lots of promisses just to make you feel good and get your vote. He seems to really want to try and make things better for everyone, but we need to make choises.
If YOU out there, happen to go, later on in the meeting someone should ask Garth for a comparision of PMSH cocus and the other government Garth was in, you will be inlightened. Remeber the corporate run media doesn’t always tell the masses what they should relly know!
Hello everyone, funny how making the comment that one’s electronics is fryed can cause such a wide discussion. But ya, I talked to Garth about having a meeting in St.John’s this coming Tuesday or Wednedsay night. Seeing as we decided that we were not only short on notice but on cash to run the event, Garth told me he’s planning a ‘Atlantic Canada tour’ in the next month or two.
So ya Garth, i’ve been reading up on the Ontario MMP System. Seeing as the St.John’s Regional Youth Parliament (a non-partisan, non-binding group of Young people who meet to debate 3 ‘Youth Government led’ Resolutions and some Private Member Resolutions, having an MMP-system for the next Federal Election was included in one such resolution.
And even though Harper is most likely against MMP at the present, I believe how MMP works out for Ontario (if Ontario voters in 60 ridings vote 51/55% in favour of it and 60% province-wide) will prove to be a test of the system in general. In other words, we’ll get to see if MMP is really a ‘better’ system or not.
And just like Former CCF Saskatchewan Premier Tommy Douglas did with State Medicare, we can field-test the idea in one province (i.e. Saskatchewan) and then when it worked and after being modified, it was implemented nationally by the then-Liberal government, under pressure from the first Federal NDP Leader Tommy Douglas.
In the same way, if Ontarions vote in favour of MMP, we can see how the system really works come the next election after 2007: if the system works better than our current one, we can take it federal. If not, we can look into other systems!
Hi Frank,
Read it, read it again! Unbloodybelievable. And this woman is the mayor? Has she no small idea of how a democracy is supposed to work or is she simply very very stupid and no one else wanted the job?
Dick Harris. Why do they always have a name like Dick? Oh well, helps to remember them. Sharon Smith. The letter writing campaign starts tomorrow. This cannot be allowed to pass. The people in Skeena Bulkly Valley need to know that folks outside care too.
This is just so wrong on so many levels.
Harper you shameless £!£^$!*. No way this happened without your knowledge, you’re too anal and you run too tight a sphincter to let these pod people pass on their own. Shame!
Bad enough we have to put up with Gordo Campbell, but the Flying Monkey Crap Artists and now their pod people too!? No way!
Geo
lol,
Went googling about and 1st thing I found was
The attractive 48 year old mayor of a small Canadian town posed for her husband in her office, wearing nothing but her official chain of office. Somehow, the picture was lifted from her home computer and circulated throughout the world via the internet. Some members of the town’s council asked her to resign because of her “catastrophic error in judgment”.
If they boot her out, we want her as our mayor.
Geo
no wonder the Cons want her.
Some one made a comment on the G&M comments regarding the undercover cops at the SPP summit that said something along the lines that there is Canadian law that guarantees that any police action regarding protesters MUST be looked over by a judge.
Does anyone have any information on this?
I’m going googley-eyed trying to track down Canadian law in this regard.
So, if Ralph Goodale joining you on your tour of the west? What’s he upto these days?
Hey Garth,
Where do you stand on the upcoming referendum on MMP in Ontario? Will you be campaigning on the issue?
Cheers!

Impressive article.
For the information of this board, there’s a discussion forum at Asia Times where Chan Akya contributed some of his thoughts. He is being compared intellectually to Spengler. Akya’s articles are thought provoking. The Spengler Forum in particular posts intriguing topics. I was wondering what vision people on this board have about Canada’s future and/or which direction you believe it should move toward?
My own:
Because five provinces are or hold promise to be “have provinces,†it’s time to overhaul the concept of equalization: BC, Alberta, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland (Hebron agreement). The federal governments use those funds like clubs to enforce their will on provinces and the formulas used create dissension rather than unity. It’s time we stopped squabbling with each other and recognize we’re all Canadians with strong de-centralized governments. Decentralized government worked to foster competitiveness, but at the same time caused diverseness to grow over the years. The fly in the ointment to accomplish Canada as a nation is Quebec. Would they finally join the federation if the question were put to them, “Would you be in favour of a new union based on co-operation?†That same referendum would be needed IMHO to change the Constitution reflecting a stronger federal government that binds us together without it using the power of its purse for bribery. I do believe separatism, perhaps erroneously, is dying in Quebec, but gaining devotees in other provinces.
Time too to give major cities powers for raising revenues. Presently, Canada’s largest cities, Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto and Calgary have no powers to raise revenues other than increase provincial taxes. By necessity included, a criteria based on revenue or population, or smaller cities would grab revenue powers from the provinces and/or federal departments? Presently our largest cities who desperately need infrastructure funding are at the mercies of federal and provincial jurisdictions.
An East/West energy corridor. Presently the corridor is from provinces southward with no major corridor connecting provinces. Each province has something others don’t. BC (lumber), Alberta (oil), Saskatchewan (wheat and oil), Manitoba (wheat and hydro), Ontario (manufacturing), Quebec (hydro), Atlantic Provinces. I group them because they tend toward singular administrations such as the Atlantic Accord, (fish, coal, oil, gas) Newfoundland (fish, oil, gas)
Give the United States and Mexico six months notice of our intention to opt out. NAFTA is not negotiable with the United States; lobbyists are too strong for that to be an option. At the same time a strenuous review and strengthening of policies affecting foreign ownership. Government buy outs of corporations that presently own Canada’s railway tracks from east to west returning ownership to Canadian private enterprise or federal government ownership. Canada enjoys a surplus economy and should use those funds to regain our sovereignty.
Build a new heavy icebreaker (last new icebreaker was 1969) and make plans for acquiring nuclear submarines. Russia developed its northern port capability while Canada stood still and froze its boots in the tundra! L0L

Continue and adequately fund mapping of the continental shelf before 2012 when it’s due to be submitted to arbitration. What an adventure that will be…for the first time Canada’s input without England giving our territory away.
Deal with the backlog of aboriginal land claims. It’s admirable that Quebec split off 1/3 of their province to bring Nunavik about .
http://www.ainc-inac.gc.ca/qc/aqc/art/inuits_e.html
The federal government needs to combine financial autonomy along with societal. (IMHO, Quebec and the federal government withheld the financial aspect.)
A comprehensive Canadian climate and emissions approach.
Stop provinces from allowing private enterprise to turn Canada’s health care into a two-tier system.

Hey Garth,

Further to Greg W. and the economy, Randall Denley has some pithy comments on imports from China in his column on “Our fool’s paradise of cheap products” in to-day’s Ottawa Citizen:
“Cheap offshore production seems great, for a while. The trouble is, corporations and retailers haven’t stopped to ask who will buy all their stuff once people are unemployed or forced into minimum wage jobs. …
Corporations have been living in a fantasy world where they can ship jobs overseas but still sell products at home at a good profit. It’s brilliant until the effects of that kind of thinking work their way through the system and the people who you need to buy your stuff no longer have the money.” – http://www.canada.com/ottawacitizen/columnists/story.html?id=2e73dbfb-20d3-477c-b867-ff4df145a507

I would really like to know the advantages of such a system? Would the MPPs selected from the list be as obligated to the party as our present MPPs? Would they be part of the whipped voting system at Queen’s park? Can someone give me an idea of how many new MPPs there would be in addition to the ones we have now. Would they have the same salary and expense accounts as the present MPPs? Has any one projected the cost of a new system? I have rad the website and I understand that those who worked on this are recommending it but I am yet to hear why it is good for Ontario and the taxpayer?
