Getting tough

vancouver-police1.jpg

mptvsmall13.jpg The Harper Conservatives keep the pressure on the Dion Liberals as the third week in a stormy session begins in Ottawa. Tuesday afternoon the minister of finance, just a day shy of the income trust bombshell anniversary, will drop a mini-budget on the Commons. Without question, it will contain, or promise, tax cuts, and paint an economic picture so bright I hear the Parliamentary pages will be handing out shades.

Meanwhile the initial piece of legislation to hit the House – C-2, the law-and-order package – is the first test of Mr. Harper’s pass-this-or-get-an-election manifesto. At this point, it looks like opposition MPs will turn it into the law of the land.

jennings.jpg So is this caving in to the Tory agenda? Or is it a bundle of changes that most Canadians want? MPtv sought some answers from the always outspoken Lib justice critic, Marlene Jennings.

The Liberals have a justice critic? That is surprising after having an injustice minister for 13 years that they would now have a justice critic.

Both the US and Russia have two-term limits for the people at the top. Fair enough.

Now Russians want Putin to stay (I wonder why?!) — does that mean the US (and us) gets dickhead and dubya for a never-ending term? Gawd help us!

Hey Garth, have you looked at the press release NL Liberal MP Gerry Bryne put out on the new Elections Act! 60% of Humber-St.Barbe would be excluded from voting, due to a lack of a street address (because route number are used for address).

Isn’t this crazy!? Here’s to hoping the Senate amends this bill for the better!

Marc –

Very, very well said.

I will always remember Paul Martin during the last election, screaming to a bunch of Toronto liberal minions. That idiot David Miller was beside him.

How lame is that ??

Oh, Garth, Flaherty is making ANOTHER BIG ANNOUCEMENT tomorrow. Guess he has been sucking the pumpkin seeds again, or smoking them, eh?

Garth, I see you have it nailed.

As to the Crime Bill…I tend to support it, based on what I know. Is it posted online so we, the poor people, can actually read it?

I see Julian Fantino has regreted not insisting the new Ontario speed law was set at 30 kph over the posted limit. I think he is on the mark with that assessment. They have busted almost 1100 in 38 days for being 50 kph over the limit.

What a bunch of morons they are. Like GET A CLUE before you KILL someone idiots. I must say, I do enjoy calling the OPP and turning them in. That results in a letter being sent to the registered owner, the MTO, and their insurance company. I imagine they get a little ‘sticker shock’ on their next premium notice? GOOD!

Just dial *677 on your cell and report them…get the make, model, colour, and plate number, location, estimated speed, direction. Be the eyes the OPP and other law enforcement needs, and let’s stop the carnage from these imbeciles.

Same goes for those who weave in and out of traffic, pull wheelies on their toys, and generally are a public hazard.

Want safer roads? Then get MADD (Maturity Against Dangerous Drivers…to coin a phrase. Hehehehe)

Yes, Garth the people want this justice bill, all of it and much, much more. After ten years or so, I get tired of posting it everywhere I can. I still don’t understand the Liberal’s house arrest, especially letting it apply to violent criminals and child porners/abusers. The only complaint I have regarding the bill is that it probably doesn’t go far enough. Leasa

#10 jwlnler on 10.29.07 at 8:29 pm

So Garth, we’re really going to need to amend Bill C-31 that was passed in June 2007 concerning “voter identification”, seeing as it effectively bars most of rural Canada and NL from voting in a Federal Election.

NL Avalon Conservative MP Fabian Manning admitted on VOCM Open Line tonight that under the current legislation, he wouldn’t be able to vote in his own federal riding of Avalon, given that he doesn’t have a street address!

Interesting links. I can assure you the insurance companies have a long list of arson experts to call, but then that would not be good for them becuase they have to pay off the mortgages. No, the FBI has a bigger list and may well have done what is claimed.

The BATF (Bureau of Assault, Terrorism, and Fanatics) are experts at burning things, especially foilage like HUGE piles of Wacky Weed. I once witnessed one of their ‘burns’.

They piled and lit 120 acres of Wacky Weed and wiped out all the livestock and people for 15 miles downwind. Yep, they know how to burn things…including Waco!

BTW, the horses making love to cows was hilarious to see. Confusing as Hell for the cows, but the horses looked happy.

The people were very friendly as I drove through the towns. They were all waving with both their hands and thier bodies. LMAO!

It wasn’t until I actually visited there that I realized it is on the Canadian side. The American side falls are…BORING!

It is all John Candy’s fault for making ‘Canadian Bacon’ you know?

At least the box of ‘Niagra Falls Salt Water Taffy’ I bought clearly says ‘Made in Canada’!

I look at it this way…we sucker them into coming here to actually SEE the Falls.

What a crying shame about the casinos in Windsor. My heart just pines for those poor fools that think they can beat the house. Yeah right. They also willingly support the Lotto, and the odds are better winning a Slot or CRAP’s. Well, that explains part of it, eh?

Dear Garth,

With Minister Flaherty jumping out in front of the retailers last week to implore them to cut their prices (what a weasel that man is… lol) I think it is high time that we harmonize our Cnd $

with the EURO!!!!

Those boys south of the border with their plummeting dollar, and missing nukes, are headed for the scrap heap right along with Stephen Harper.

Let’s lead the world and put some pressure on the US to adopt a WORLWIDE common currency that makes perfect economic sense and honours our ancestoral heritage.

Our retailers and manufacturers need some currency certainty. They shouldn’t have to be currency clairvoiants in order to make a buck.

Sincerely,

Isn’t it surprising what the CPC will try and do to win an election this year they so desparately want! They’ve been prolonging these crime bills and now are trying to blame the Liberal party for the delays.
PMSH is so desparate he will do anything to bring about an election he thinks he will win. It just might come back to “haunt” him (remember last year haunted Income Trust announcement?).
You’re also right on the GST- keep it and give us other tax breaks that are more meaningful.
Have a good day, and keep up your good work keeping us posted.
Cheers.

Yes, agree, they’d better get their act together. How difficult can it bet to look at the elections act and come up with regulations that will cover all potential voters in an ‘honest and constitional’ manner. For Christ’s sake I was an IT business analyst for 20 yrs. We had to use logic and cover all possibilities. Is it too much to ask so called ‘intelligent’ people to do the same thing. Enuf about politiquing. Enough about the con book on how to screw the committees from doing anything.

#24 Molly on 10.29.07 at 11:10 pm

Is C-2 what most Canadians want? Not really a fair question in these times of fear and insecurity. I asked my kids and their friends though, all 21-30 years. What they want to be asked is: what should the government be doing to solve their own nation’s problems. This generation is poised to become the core of a 21st century progressive coalition and want to see a 50 year plan that doesn’t exclude their chance of having families, breathing clean air, travelling without being on a watchlist, having eco-homes/cars/workplaces/smart communities that include daycare, social safety nets, in short what was once so abundant 50 years ago.

#25 Ike on 10.29.07 at 11:12 pm

Dion has suggested he wouldn’t topple the government over a GST cut, although he hasn’t given a firm answer, while the NDP would likely oppose any major business tax reductions.

This is a time with firm leadership with clear direction is needed.

Again, Dion waffles by suggesting on the one hand that he doesn’t like the GST cut on the one hand, but he wouldn’t topple the government over it on the other.

This type of double-mindedness and double-speak will get us nowhere.

#26 Austin So on 10.29.07 at 11:18 pm

I don’t think any CPC supporters looked at the video…or perhaps they put their fingers in their ears and muttering “there’s no place like home there’s no place like home…”.

It is nice to get the timeline from Marlene Jennings for the crime bills with the amendments from last year. You know, the ones that the CPC are now trying to take credit for, after letting them die on the table. That kind of information needs to be shouted out. It would be fanstastic if the timeline were published for us the electorate to see, and let Harper and his minions try to explain their disconnect with reality…

MIsinformation bordering on outright lies sadly are a hallmark of the CPC. They function on the belief that the public has a ahort-term memory and don’t care for anything else beyond soundbites. But of course, for their part of the electorate, perhaps that is actually true. Pathetic really.

Not sure how much news play this story this will get among the research-challenged mainstream Canuck media but now the Income Trust story has more of an international flavour. A little more spicy, and sure to give the CONservatives a good dose of upset stomach.

Have your day in the sun tomorrow Jimmy F. but your days of glory are surely numbered. A year later and still the Income Trust story is alive and well…

#32 Liz on 10.30.07 at 2:42 am

Though the Harper party has some tricks up its sleeve, tomorrow they’re going to come up with INCOME SPLITTING.

Now what?

Nothing for single parents, no day care help (face it, $100 won’t get you a New Year’s Eve babysitting for one child, let alone a month of care for a 4-year old, to say nothing of a couple hours of after-school care while the parent rushes to the day care to avoid $1 per minute late fees.

Now what, Mr. Turner? They’re going to announce Income Splitting and cram the rest of their crud down our throats to get it.
Ixnay on the otnewNay overnmentGay!

A real Canadian government will get it done. There’s no need to think Canadians can trust the Harper party, even if we must turn down that shiny thing. There’s time.

A real government can get it done without sacrificing children to do it.

#33 Catherine on 10.30.07 at 4:55 am

So the Libs are screaming that Stephen Harper “raised” our income tax. Well this “0.05% increase” amounts to $181.89 per year ($36,378 x .0005).

Now think about folks – the 2006 and 2007 budgets amounted to a lot more in our overall tax reductions than this Libbers’ gift of 181.89. Just the transit pass tax deduction is saving us this amount.

However, if it’s true that the government is awash with our money the 1% GST cut AND the 0.5% income tax rate reduction would be great! And it still leaves about 10 Billion to pay down the national debt.

#34 Steve on 10.30.07 at 6:04 am

What I want to know about these crime bills is what if anything makes the CPC brand of these bills different than what the LPC had proposed?

Are they that different that everything had to be redone?

It is no wonder that the environmental laws have taken so damn long to go through and why I have no doubts that our planet is doomed to existence. Nothing has impressed me to date with this minority government, much less the previous one before.

Also, John, don’t forget that many weapons are run through reserves and I haven’t seen one Premiere yet willing to tackle that issue. Handguns remain the weapon of choice of the criminal element and they have been ‘registered’ since the 1930′s, which proves what a total farce the long gun registry is. It’s simply a method for ‘do nothing’ governments to look like they are ‘doing something’. The only way to deal with killers, is to lock them up. Period. It may not do a heck of a lot for the killer, but at least it spares new victims. Now, that’s doing something. Leasa

I looked at Bill C31 re voter identification and it is not at all clear what this is all about. It clearly says CIVIC address shall be on the voters LIST, but so far as identification at the polls only says “address” without specifying. Same old, same old its all open to interpretation, I did not find any definitions of what they mean by those terms. Clearly Elections Canada says there is a problem and one would hope that this issue would be of the highest priority to ALL MPs, but it seems they are still more interested in playing power games in the HoC.

Deported man faces firearms charges

The Canadian Border Services Agency is investigating how and when a man deported from Canada two years ago sneaked back into the country only to be arrested on the weekend by Toronto police on multiple firearms charges.

Why was this arsehole allowed back in Canada?

#51 LoH_Numa on 10.30.07 at 9:50 am

Garth,

Walking into work today, I was delayed by yet another shooting in the Entertainment District…this time it was Adelaide at Peter.

This follows an attempted murder just last week at Adelaide at Younge.

I’m not going to trash-talk the street that I live and commute on, but you know – “Crime” isn’t just some sort of theoretical thing I well about from the comfort of small town Ontario. It’s a reality out here.

In my view, the problem isn’t the street. It’s the people.

The kind of people of who bring loaded guns around with them shouldn’t be out on the street.

At the same time — how are we going to pay for the prisons to lock these people up? Moreover, how are we going to rehabilitate these people?

#52 Scot Lowe on 10.30.07 at 10:08 am

Bill… I think you are losing it….name calling, crustiness…cabin fever maybe?

#53 Bill-Muskoka on 10.30.07 at 10:16 am

Hey Scott! Yeah you. Here are some more responsible ‘rats’ who understand the difference between right and wrong. You, probably about like their drunkard father, do not.

Daughters Call 911 On Speeding Dad

This moron so drunk he couldn’t standup for a sobriety test, and driving over 100 mph, endangered everyone, even his own daughters, but then says, like all the other Losers on our highways Caller(crying): “Dad!” Male Voice: “You guys are the ones that got me going this way.” Caller: “We didn’t have any….drinking and speeding, Dad, pull over!” Direct from the 911 recording.

“Mr. Montoya has five previous DWI arrests,” Santa Fe County Sheriff Greg Solano said.

Solano said Montoya admitted to drinking a six-pack of beer while waiting for the girls at a pumpkin patch. A closed can of beer was found in the vehicle. Solano said officers could not complete a sobriety test on Montoya because he could not stand without possibly falling down.

Montoya is charged with one count of DWI and three counts of abandonment or abuse of a child.

“They did the right thing, and hopefully they made a difference in their father’s life and hopefully their father will live on to be a father in the future,” Solano said.

Driving is a priviledge, not a right, and the highways have to be SHARED by all of us.

#54 Scot Lowe on 10.30.07 at 10:43 am

And how many tickets have you had? How many times have your driven like a total irresponsible moron and endangered people? the way you come on about the issue I would suspect LOTS!

The highways belong to Ontarians, not individuals. We either share them sensibly or those who refuse LOSE their vehicle, license, and pay major fines and insurance premiums.

Can’t plan enough time to make a safe trip and not endanger others? Too FRIGGIN’ BAD for you! Your lack of planning is NOT my, or anyone else’s problem. Oh, and do you do Wacky Weed instead of alcohol? Oh, that makes such a difference in alertness and response abilities.

If the shoe fits then YOU make the needed changes and there will be no problem for you…Will there?

Seeing as how you call me a dipstick I will tell you things are NOT oilright with your position!

Bill.. At the risk of you popping an artery, I must tell you that your presumptions are pathetic and insulting. You would do well to try and control your anger and stop blindly accusing people of things you can have no idea about.
At this point I,ll appologize to Garth for using his blog to respond to your inane comments and end this rather distasteful exchange.

Fear not Scott. I am as calm as a feather pillow. You are the one in a twit over the issue.

I merely have a position gained from decades of dealing with the aftermath of these morons. If you are one of them. Too bad. I stand firm on my comments.

BTW, we are all paying for these morons via our insurance rates and taxes. Those Paramedics, Fire Rescue, law enforcement, emerg and hospital, insurance adjusters, insurance company staff personnel COST MONEY. We pay for it all via our insurance premiums and taxes.

Go visit one of the GTA salvage yards sometime. Try Copart or Impact Auto, maybe Number 9 Auto Salvage. Look at the hectres of slightly damaged vehicles that have been written off because parts and labour costs are too high to fix even minor damage nowadays.

Take a long look at the serious damage that results from these morons. Note how the vehicles have to be cut up to extract the victims. Take a good deep inhale of the bodily functions left behind as people have died in these needless crashes. In fact, sign up for a safe drivers course and watch a few videos of what really happens in crashes.

These are not accidents, these are the direct result of immature, irresponsible, children caring less about anyone, including themselves. They think they are Invincible until reality hits, and then they are either dead, crippled for life, or feeling sorry they were idiots to begin with.

All your attempts at denial are a laugh Scott. You simply tell me you ARE PART of THE PROBLEM, not part of the solution.
