Why I did it

Some random thoughts of a political outcast:

• And, yes, I am dead Liberal meat. I mean, the evidence is overwhelming. I read just days ago that Stephane Dion had thrown my sorry, misogynistic ass out of the caucus room.

I watched on television as weaselette Jane Taber told a breathless Mike Duffy all about the actual slides I used in my PowerPoint presentation to national caucus on May 14th, the reaction of female colleagues to my “tasteless” display and the whupping I took from Dion himself.

I’ve read all about it on blogs, which now are trying to analyze whether or not (a) I engineered this mess in order to be thrown out and start the NOTA (none-of-the-above) party, or if (b) Bob Rae forces are leaking caucus info in order to cut my legs off since I have been helping the leader on communications issues, or if (c) Iggy forces encouraged me to be manly and provocative just to tick off the feminazis in the Lib caucus, leading to my dressing down by Dion, leading in turn to an Ignatieff hormonal attack on the leader, or if (d) certain caucus members are sending a message, via the W-lady, that I no longer have the protection of caucus confidentiality, in the hope of scuttling the controversial carbon plan, or if (e) my private bits have been too close to my gas tank, thereby weakening my intellect.

Well, this is far too deep for me, of course. And I guess I’ll find out next Wednesday morning what my fate is. Doubtlessly, Weasel Woman will let you know first. Subscribe to her news service, sponsored by Flomax, “The Leaking Caucus,” at jtaber@globeandmail.ca.

• As forecast on this blog months ago, PMSH chief of staff Ian Brodie is being thrown overboard. The writing was on the wall when Brodie freelanced some stupid remarks about the Obama-Clinton slugfest to a CTV reporter, creating a minor international skirmish and making his boss look like the neophyte bush league leader of a northern middle power. Hey wait…

The University of Western Ontario prof, former Reform Party organizer, former OLO boss when Harper was in charge of the Alliance, and the guy’s right-hand man since taking office, Brodie is now quite expendible. Harper was livid over the Obama thing, and word is he blamed Brodie for almost being called out on the Cadman tape. In addition, Brodie recommended Mad Max Bernier for a cabinet post he was clearly not up to, and now PMSH has to deal with that mess, too.

Brodie, if you can believe it, also called a Conservative MP, instructed him to issue a media release supporting a position he did not agree with, and then ordered him to stop writing his blog instantly, or he’d be kicked out of caucus. Imagine that. Off with his head.

• So, where did that insane PhotoShop illustration of Ignatieff and Dion on the top of this post come from? Yes, from the acne-covered, light-deprived teenaged mutants who are held in the basement of the CPC headquarters, where they maintain Conservative.ca, proud organ of the governing party. This is the site which on any given day, has three to six pictures of Stephane Dion on its home page, plus videos of the guy, plus a blog written by his dog, plus a mess of other things that 13-year-old virgins think is soooo cool.

Have a look. Judge for yourself the level of intelligence the Tory brain trust thinks the Canadian voter has. Go ahead – www.Conservative.ca. Just click. It’s not like they’ll suck off your IP and ferret out your email address and send you a pinup of Pierre Poilievre, or anything.

Oh my goodness, I just saw a photo op of Ian Brodie looking to the ‘North Star’. He is some kind of scary s..t.
This is supposed to be the man who looks after Harper’s interests? Holy cow, he seems to be disorientated, confused, scattered in this photo op. Where did this picture come from? Middle of campaign when he was bribing RCMP Zackie to implicate Ralph Goodale in a criminal investigation?

Looks like he may be heading for a criminal investigation. Democrats aren’t very forgiving, i’ve heard.

Hi Garth,

You have said a few times that being in the Liberal caucus is great because of the level of respect people have for each other and their ideas. The flip side of this is, I think, that there is not a lot of tolerance for ideas that may seem disrespectful.

Now I don’t know what happened in that caucus meeting (I’ve made a guess) but I would say that if anyone was offended from what was perceived as misogyny then there is cause for concern. The good news, it would seem to me, is that such differences can be easily worked out through open and honest communication.

Also, if I may add, using the term “feminazi” isn’t very respectful – feminists have been working too hard to be so easily dismissed. While I don’t always agree with their (and I use ‘their’ in the most general sense as feminism is a very diverse area) conclusions – especially the postmodern ones – I do respect them for forcing me to think in different ways.

It’s good to be a liberal but, in my opinion, it means your beliefs will always be challenged and one should be open minded enough to listen and possibly update them if sufficiently swayed.

I sincerely hope everything works out for the best. If it means anything I think you’ve been a welcomed addition to the Liberal fold and, if I am not mistaken from what I gather from your posts, it seems you have grown as a person since joining – and that’s what it’s all about.

How come our only MP who’s riding includes a good chunk of the Internet is so silent on Bell and copyright? Faskinatin’ tho these highschool politics are, I’m kinda hungry for the real thing here. Why is our wireless service so poor? Why is our broadband service so poor? How can Bell think it legal to interfere with third party services while selling the same services and allowing theirs to work unfettered?

I know how and why. Poor governance. Commercial interference. Corruption. Apathy and ignorance. Please fix!! Or at least acknowledge that we have a problem here.

Zaccardelli rides into African sunset

May 22, 2008 04:30 AM
James Travers

OTTAWA – Some Mounties get their man; others get their reward. Giuliano Zaccardelli is heading for a senior Interpol job, leaving behind unanswered questions and an RCMP struggling to recover from the calamities of his watch.

Defrocked in December 2006, he’s now the surprising choice to help Africa fight crime. It’s a rebirth for the former commissioner and an eyebrow-arching pick for the organization that polices the world.

…………

All of that makes the appointment inappropriate; what makes it so discouraging is the irony. Blamed here for mismanagement, scandal and perhaps tilting an election, Zaccardelli is being dispatched to help a continent where cronyism, corruption and tainted elections are the norm, not the exception.

Hey Garth, this isn’t your typical post. I’m not sure what to make of it.

Are you being ousted?
Are you considering quiting politics?
Is nobody (on the inside) listening to you?
Is Stéphane Dion stepping aside?
Doesn’t anybody care about finding solutions?

I frankly couldn’t care less if Ian Brodie is being thrown under a bus or if the conservative.ca site is run by teenagers or if Pierre Poilievre is the latest attack puppet or if Jane Taber is a snivelling, yellow journalist, etc.

What I do care about is a united Liberal Party with a winning attitude. People are waiting for the Liberals to do something, anything to stop the death of a thousand small cuts that the Harper Conservatives are inflicting on Canada.

You Liberals should be kicking ass. Yet, you’re complaining about powerpoint decks, backstabbing each other, disagreeing on policy direction, sabotaging any potential moves forward, etc..

Il faut que vous vous repreniez en main. Travailez en équipe, câlice.

#19 Bill-Muskoka on 05.22.08 at 8:40 am

Good morning Garth,

Golly gee willikers, have Esther give you a deep shoulder massage (don’t forget to tip her) and try to relax. With all this intrigue flailing about you must be feeling the load?

We would not want you to get to the point you take your Crotch Rocket for a ride up the steps of Parliament (not a bad idea for show, but hell on the bike’s tires, rims, and suspension), and start doing a Rocky like dance screaming ‘I’m MAD AS HELL and I’m not going to take it anymore!’

No, we do not want that unless we are invited. LOL

Meanwhile, I sit here, as I did a while back when the story broke, and look at Ian Brodie and ask myself the following questions.

1. Is this sallow, pre-maturly balding person really some other worldly religious fanatic who has his head in something other than reality?

A. Sure looks the part. Those dreamy glazed eyes are the sure mark of a religious schizophrenic, or a drug addict.

2. Did Harper really get furious over Brodie’s mis-speak?

A. I doubt it. Harper hates all things liberal, and probably was behind it.

3. Is Brodie really so upset, or merely getting another lateral transfer to do more work for Steve, and damage to Canadian democracy and international standing?

A. Who gives a damn!

Now, back in the moment of today’s reality I wait to hear what is going to be done to cap and lower this feeding frenzy of greed in the commodities market regarding the price of oil.

That, at the present, is the most critical issue government has to deal with. This cannot be allowed to continue. Time for a NEP and one with serious teeth. If the other oil exporting countries can do it, then we have all the precidents we need to as well.

As to CPC basement art lab…I just ignore their childish efforts. If people are dumb enough to believe that kind of crap then they deserve to be enslaved. Stupid Sheeple are their own worst enemy.

A little something to lighten up this blog from the visiting trolls.

Dear Revenue Canada or whatever your current name may be:

Enclosed and/or attached, you will find my 2007 tax return showing that I owe $3,407.00 in taxes.

Please note the attached article from the Toronto Globe and Mail; dated 12 November, wherein you will see the Canadian Department of National Defense is paying $171.50 per hammer and Fisheries and Oceans Canada has paid $600.00 per toilet seat for its icebreakers.

As payment, I am enclosing four (4) toilet seats (valued @ $2,400) and six (6) hammers valued @ $1,029), which I secured at Canadian Tire, bringing my total remittance to $3,429.00.

Please apply the overpayment of $22.00 to the “Help Stephan Dion Election Fund,” as noted on my return.

You can do this inexpensively by sending them one (1) 1.5″ Phillips Head screw (see aforementioned article from The Globe and Mail detailing how the Department of Public Works pays $22.00 each for 1.5″ Phillips Head Screws). One Philips screw is enclosed for your convenience.

It has been a pleasure to pay my tax bill this year, and I look forward to paying it again next year.

God Bless Canada !

Sincerely,

A Newfie

Have a great day!

#23 Leasa on 05.22.08 at 9:47 am

Garth, why would you call Jane Taber such a horrific name? Do you think she belongs in the kitchen and should just ‘know her place’ in this world? Calling a successful career oriented woman a feminazi is horrible! This is 2008 Garth people have evolved. Jane is simply doing her job.

If I remember correctly (I’m sure I’ll be soundly corrected if wrong) Jane alluded that it was the female members of the Lib caucus that were so upset with what you did. Not only that…if I am understanding what took place…you acted like the judge, jury and executioner of Julie in a very derogatory way. What did she do to you?

If this had gone on in a Conservative Caucus…the Liberal wild-eyed rabid attack dogs would be working over time, including you. Is it a matter of you can dish it out, but you simply can’t take it?

My bets are that you will be an indie as early as the end of next week.

Garth, hi, I would like to tell you a few of my concerns. I will try not to let it become a rant. Thank-you for listening. The new Harper staff member is another reject from Ont. Like Baird, Flaherty, Harris etc. Their policies and procedures on Native land disputes MUST tell us something. What the heck is a resume FOR? Please, see the movie- ‘One Dead Indian- the DUDLEY GEORGE Story’. He, Giorno, is right there with Mike, in all their glory. Then, read some transcripts (taped by reporters) of our Uniformed, speaking their uninhibited opinions on Natives. Then, look up some old (or new?) reports on the ‘Midnight Rides’ the Uniformed in some? parts of our country like to give to Native people. In -40degree weather. I’m p*ssed Garth. THEN, the very next story on Borque after the staff change bit was a story (NP?) that ‘Harper is trying to woo soccer moms’??? Ya, right. Rejects. Losers. THEN I read the Jim Travers’ story on Zacci…Garth we Canadians were duped and tricked and LIED to- in order for the Reformers and Onts’ fine examples to even BE in Ottawa! PLEASE, do something? Have a great day folks….thanks for listening. P.S. Markus D @ 612am- I like what you wrote!

Well, HAPPY DAY! Seems Our SCoC has a Helluva lot more sense and fortitude than our southern neighbors.

SCC quashes man’s suit over fly in bottled water

The Supreme Court of Canada voted unanimously on Thursday to dismiss Martin Mustapha’s appeal, and ruled he must pay the costs for the water company he took to court.

Mustapha and his wife found the dead fly, then later found half of another fly, in a large water bottle delivered to their home.

The hairdresser claimed to have suffered serious psychiatric symptoms after the incident, including sleeplessness and a major depressive order. He also claimed his sex life and his business were affected and he developed a phobia of flies.

Mustapha successfully sued the bottled-water company — Culligan of Canada Ltd. — in 2005 and was awarded $341,000.

“Although his reaction was ‘objectively bizarre’, his particular circumstances, along with Culligan’s knowledge that the nature of its product indicated a concern for purity and cleanliness, made psychiatric injury from the incident foreseeable for Mr. Mustapha,” said a Supreme Court summary of the case.

However, Culligan appealed and the decision was overturned.

The appeal court ruled that the trial judge “erred in failing to incorporate an objective component when determining whether Culligan owed a duty to Mr. Mustapha” according to the document.

The court also said the judge “erred in asking whether psychological harm to Mr. Mustapha was possible rather than probable,” and ordered Mustapha to pay Culligan’s legal bills.

These kind of frivoulous lawsuits are what cause all of us to pay, and pay, and pay with price inflation. ‘Got a pair of eyes? You do? Do you ever look at what you’re ingesting? Next case!’

Maybe he should now sue his lawyer for causing him actuall psychological harm, and injury to his wallet?

Same goes for total morons who put a cup of hot coffeee between their legs at a McDonald’s.

The world is not perfect, with maybe the exception of some greedy lawyers who are perfect assholes!

Stop the insanity of blaming everyone else for your own negligence!

I feel sure that you are already clearly aware of this, but just in case (sometimes it’s hard to see the forest through the trees after all)…

You surely must realize that the recent sophomoric attacks that you have endured from “Harpers Hapless” are resounding indications that you are doing them damage in your quest for integrity in government.

As a Canadian I would like to thank you for enduring the B.S. you’ve endured on our behalf.

Your ability to expose these roaches for what they are is commendable. Please keep turning on the lights so that we can all watch them scurry and hide.

Please keep up the good work. You are appreciated more than you might realize.

Once again sir, thank you for standing up for Canada. You ARE appreciated much more than you may realize.

Garth … this poll should be of deep concern for you and all Liberals:

Dion’s approval rating sinks again

Poll finds only 10% approve of performance by Liberal leader

Toronto Star – May 22, 2008
Allan Woods

OTTAWA – A caution to federal Liberals who thought their fortunes had hit rock bottom: It has become worse.

Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion’s approval rating has sunk to its lowest level yet, with nine of 10 Canadians saying they disapprove or are not sure of his performance as the head of the party, according to the latest Toronto Star/Angus Reid opinion poll.

Not since former Liberal leader John Turner bottomed out with a 14 per cent approval rating shortly after losing the 1988 election have things been so bad for the head of Canada’s most successful political party. Just 10 per cent of those surveyed stand behind Dion’s leadership, the poll shows, compared to 32 per cent for Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

What’s worse is that the number of people who said they were unsure about Dion’s performance has dropped from 46 per cent at the end of last summer to 30 per cent this month, meaning that Canadians are making up their minds about a leader who has had difficulties rallying his party behind him as well as communicating his party’s positions to potential voters.

“What’s really disheartening is it’s almost as if everyone’s made up their minds already,” said the polling firm’s Mario Canseco. “Those who actually have something to say about Dion are saying negative things.”

The online poll of 1,004 Canadians is considered accurate to within 3.1 percentage points, 19 times in 20.

Overall, 34 per cent of respondents said they would vote Conservative if an election were held tomorrow, compared to 27 per cent who would vote Liberal. The New Democrats were in third place with 18 per cent support.

Meanwhile, 42 per cent of Canadians think the country is on the “wrong track,” up from 29 per cent in March. Canseco said this is a reflection of mounting concern with the economy.

Dion, however, is seen as lacking economic competence, as well as being a weak and indecisive leader, compared to Harper.

“The fact that Dion is at 8 per cent as a strong and decisive leader and 16 per cent as someone who can manage the economy effectively, this is only helping Harper,” Canseco said.

Liberals are expected to release Dion’s proposal for a federal carbon tax soon and spend the summer trying to sell the complex concept. “It has to be all about policies (this summer), but policies that can be explained in a fairly simple manner,” Canseco said.

“A carbon tax may be a little bit difficult to sell in a moment like this when Canadians want to drive, when they’re unhappy about the cost of gasoline.”

Dion is also rolling out the main plank in an environmental policy at the same time as the environment has started to recede as the most pressing priority of Canadians, eclipsed once again by health care.
………………………………..

The burning question is how can a 10% Dion leadership boost the popularity of the 27% Liberal party for any next election?

Depending on Canadians to altruistically rally to Dion and his Carbon-Income Tax Shifting scheme now looks like a last ditch effort for Dion to rescue his leadership of the Liberal party. Things don’t look good for the Liberal party consistently mired behind the Conservatives poll after poll.

Any thoughts on how this trend can be reversed ..??!!!

Hi Markus, I think since the remark, in context, was in mid-jest, I trust Garth would not disparage my great-grandmother.

She was involved in the Women’s Movement with it’s birthplace in Seneca. In 1922 there was massive resistance to women voting. Martha rode with her husband in their buggy to vote. In front of the building rough men stood, blocking any woman. So my great-grandfather Eddie, went in alone, to vote. She waited.

While inside Eddie opened the back window. Afterward, the two of them drove around the back of the building. Martha got out, climbed on top of the buggy and crawled through the open window… and voted. Then she left by the front door. The men out front were shocked.

Martha was the first (and only) woman to vote in Cayuga County. She was 73 at the time.

“With yesterday’s imposition of truth-in-labelling on Canadian food products, Prime Minister Stephen Harper has taken another uncharacteristic move aimed at wooing women.”

Not only uncharacteristic but doomed to defeat. The “ick” factor is just too large.

He continues, “OK, so it’s unlikely the average Canadian woman will swoon over Stephen Harper any time soon, despite his rapidly thinning physique.”

He is looking thinner in pictures. I couldn’t figure out if it was a crash diet, PhotoShop, a corset or lap-banding. (That’s lap-BANDING, not dancing.)

RE the whole bisphenol-A thing: a recent report showed a woman standing in front of a WHOLE WALL of things in plastic bags with the descriptor “Toddler Feeding Needs”.

Ah, will Ontario be the new leader in GHG emissions? Maybe, but not by man’s hand. Then, again, we may be finding reserves BIGGER than Alberta’s cherished Pot of Black Gold. Wouldn’t that be a HOOT? LOL

Remember, there’s a lot of unmapped, unexplored land out here in OUR boonies.

The mysterious forest rings of northern Ontario

It is a strange phenomenon: thousands of large, perfectly round “forest rings” dot the boreal landscape of northern Ontario.

Why is northern Ontario lord of the rings?

Although northern Ontario has the highest concentration of forest rings, you can also find them in the Yukon, Quebec, Russia and Australia.

“For years, we have been puzzled as to why Ontario has so many, and we now think we have some of the answers,” Hamilton says. “We have measured the isotopic signature of natural gas in a number of rings, and it suggests the gas is very geologically young and is likely still being produced today and constantly escaping into the atmosphere. Northern Ontario has the youngest and most extensive glacial clay deposits in the world, and therefore we also have the most rings.”

He estimates 80 per cent to 85 per cent of the region’s rings are methane-based, with the rest being a result of kimberlite; hydrogen sulfide (recognizable by its “rotten egg” smell); metal-based sources such as nickel, copper and zinc; or buried peat. These, too, are all sources of negative electrical charge and have a capacity to create similar electrical fields as methane.

“On the one hand, the rings are a large potential source of relatively clean natural gas. On the other hand, they are constantly venting methane into the atmosphere, which has a greenhouse gas equivalent that is more than 20 times that of carbon dioxide,” said Hamilton.

He is keen to see companies develop technology to extract the gas and use it as energy.

“Extracting the gas would therefore be doubly beneficial and also fairly easy from a technical point of view.”

And what if we find that we can capture the electricity being generated with no machinery involved. Then ‘Who’s your Daddy!’ will be the question. God, does have a wry sense of humour.

We know this from the blessings of Issac and Ishamel. God told Abram “I will bless your son Isaac and he shall inhereit the promised land.’(a barren stretch of desert) To Ishamel (the first of those to become the Arabs) he gave all the OIL!

Source of charge unclear

And what about those other exotic theories of forest rings?

“It is definitely not a UFO thing, crop circles, tree-killing fungus or meteors falling from the sky,” Hamilton laughs.

He does admit, though, that forest rings have “a million mysteries.” For example, the electrical field found inside the forest rings is a puzzle that needs to be solved.

“It shouldn’t be there,” Hamilton says. “Something is creating a huge electrical field, and we think it might be millions of chemical-eating micro-organisms in the soil.”

Imagine. Ontario stops exporting their waste to foreign landfills, and instead, keeps it, adds the bacteria, and outproduces Quebec Hydro. I am sure we would be willing to sell some to the Albertans, at a ‘fair’ market price. Heck, we might even build a transmission line to them? Irony is so sweet at times!

do something to stop thousand small cuts Harper inflicting on Canada

BY ROB WIEBE 05.22.08 8:18 AM

Great post Rob, with a nod to:

Roosevelt endured a protracted political battle with party bosses. He eventually emerged victorious. He attributed his success to a West African proverb that teaches: “Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far.” He continued to apply this proverb while president, in nation building and international conflict.

For me, disagreements or rumours, politicians and reporters – misunderstandings are just the weeds.

Speaking of misunderstandings, Harper is just one BIG misunderstanding that Canada had.

Now all that matters is that Canadians themselves give respect and commitment to results. Liberals have to grip the weeds with just the right pressure, in just the right place. And pull!

Or.. Canadians can just develop a love for infestations, and become mushrooms

Peace.

The Banana Republic – Food for Fuel

No, not the clothing chain. The deception is to create a gigantic agriculture zone to produce fuel from food to produce ethanol because the average Joe thinks it reduces GHG’s.

At first, I thought these Conservatives are so far behind the scientific results they’re ridiculous. They could and should look beyond ethanol to butanol and use waste products for the inputs to make alternative fuel.

Silly me, there’s no profit for multi-nationals in that scenario. The current government is not stupid and only looks at economic advantage in the short term. But what kind of idiot decides you use food for fuel? Let’s understand that food is not just for humans but for our protein source: cattle, hogs and chicken.

So while we thought those three amigos conferences were a joke – the joke is on us. Mexico, Canada and the U.S. are creating and promoting large tracks of farmland to develop ethanol.

None of these leaders believe in climate change just a ruse to make us feel better.

They know that the tailpipe emissions of 10% ethanol with all it’s inputs are dirtier than gasoline.

And that’s my rant for the day.

#76 John L on 05.22.08 at 3:25 pm

So…

Garth is going on the record and stating that what Taber claimed is incorrect? If that is the case one would think Turner would demand an immediate retraction, possibly via his tame lawyer. There may well be more to the story than Turner chooses to share. Ever since Tricky Dick took the US dollar off the gold standard, the world financial markets have been stealthly sliding down a slippery slope. The FIAT currency as it’s know, is nothing more than a piece of paper that is backed by nothing and it cost nothing to print.

By barb the proof-reader :) on 05.22.08 1:02 pm

Congats to your great grandmother Barb. She is truly a woman to admire. Hard to imagine that women were not allowed to vote, because we were once considered chattels. We still have far to go in this male dominated economic/political society. Can’t provide links right now, but more women are enrolled in post secondary education than men right now, doing better, and yet men still earn more than women, doing the same job.

Linda, I agree. I just googled giorno conservative

From the handling of the shooting, to the Klein link as environment minister, burying info, and the concerted effort against Kyoto, these CPC stiffs don’t give a damn about Canada, and they hate any citizen who is poor, female, different or disadvantaged – link after link, the quilt pattern emerges and the arrogance and stupidity.. and how The Reform Alliance Party took over and crept into our national politics, is all tragic. I have a feeling it’s going to get worse before it gets better.

These un-emotional nut-bars, with no human empathy, truly believe that free enterprise will save all, and should be untethered at all cost. Which is scary because they are too young or too dumb to know that it is the opposite that is true. They have been duped and swooned by really big business. Shameful. What a bunch of fished-in morons the new CPC are. Either that, or the corporations are paying them well, the whole CPC bunch. Sad day for Canada. The Neo-Cons control the message, grab all the power, and history tells us what happens next.

I think since the remark, in context, was in mid-jest, I trust Garth would not disparage my great-grandmother.

That is a fair point, I don’t think there was any intentional insult intended but I worry that by endorsing such language as ‘feminazi’ (even in jest) a negative view toward feminism in general is portrayed.

I think everyone should subscribe to some sort of feminism (or at least be pro-feminism), but negative perceptions about such ideas can create barriers to entry which in turn hurts us all. At the very least I think people should familiarize themselves with some of the basic ideas and concepts.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feminism

One idea that I am fond of is ‘eco-feminism’ which attaches the ideas about the oppression of women to the oppression of nature. I once heard an argument that claimed you couldn’t be an environmentalist without being a feminist and thought there was plenty of substance to such a claim.

In any case, that is a great story about you great-grandmother. Thanks for sharing it.

Any Mandelbrots found within those ‘forest rings’ .. after all those micro-organisms could just be the ‘aliens’ we are looking for and they are amongst us trying their best to signal us.. ever think of that ..???

By Harry S on 05.22.08 3:15 pm

No Mandelbrots there Harry. I think a tad bit of Chaos Theory resides however. LOL

Now, were their Mandelbrot Sets, imagine how easy it would be to grasp the micro picture from the macro picture, eh?

As to aliens. Why of course they’re due to aliens…everyone knows that! If you haven’t seen the movies ‘The Arrival’ & ‘Arrival II’ then you would not believe me if I said the aliens are warming the planet with underground facilities.

Then, again, it could be as several scientists believe and evidence of old kimberlite chimneys. Diamonds are forever you know? Imagine our chagrin if those old volcanic pipes got HOT again? There’d be a lot more to worry about than melting ice, polar bears, and flooding.

Besides, how do we know some alien spaceship isn’t buried there…and now ‘It’s ALIVE!’.

I mean I have seen stranger things like what McDonald’s and Booger King call hamburger meat! LOL

Maybe it’s due to buried whales who are now farting? Heck, for all we know, China has mined a big vent through the earth to transfer the GHG’s to Cananda. Sneaky, eh? LOL

Maybe its a natural beer vat, there are those ‘micro-organism’ thingys they say? BURP!

Good piece from Tom Walkom. I’d rather see Canada make the stuff it needs. Did you know that almost all the socks, underwear, buttons and zippers in the WORLD are made in China? I could manage to make the first three but I wouldn’t have a clue how to make a zipper.

Funny CM – My DH worked for a zipper mfg. in Mtl when he first emigrated to Canada. Doubt the co. exists today.

BTW he spent 4 years post high school in a trade school in France, spent many yrs working all over France & Germany (with a contract co.) and in the Ivory Coast, and via P.Q., his credentials were not recognized in N.S. He ended up working as a labourer at Dal, repairing everything in student dorms. You name it, he did it.

He then took a 48 wk course at Nova Scotia Institute of Technology in robotics. Couldn’t find a job here. IMP didn’t wan’t to hire people who had an opinion – just 21 yr olds who would never question management.

Thankfully, when he got laid off from a Hydraulics co, I convinced him to take a year’s course in IT. It cost us $10K back about 16 yrs ago. Well, he’s done well since then, but not nearly as well financially as he could in PQ or Ont. or elsewhere. But, money is not everything.

Civitas Society

Civitas Society is a low-key but influential Conservative group in Canada with close ties to Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

In its last annual report filed with the government, Mr. Harper’s chief of staff, Ian Brodie, is listed as a director and Mr. Brodie attended the group’s annual conference in May 2006 held at the luxurious Brookstreet Hotel in the Kanata high-tech research park of the Canadian capital, Ottawa.

The Civitas Soceity has been described as “a society for conservative and libertarian academics, think-tankers, lobbyists and journalists.”

Members include Brian Lee Crowley, president of the Atlantic Institute for Market Studies, a conservative, free-market think tank in eastern Canada, and a member of the advisory Board of the Frontier Institute for Public Policy in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Montreal Economic Institute president Michel Kelly-Gagnon is also a member of Civitas.

The group’s current president is Lorne Gunter, a columnist with the right-wing national paper, National Post, launched by media mogul Conrad Black and now owned by the Asper family, which also owns the CanWest Global media empire in Canada.

Its annual meeting held in Ottawa in early May 2006, was intended to be “private”. But journalist Elizabeth Thompson of the Montreal Gazette, covered the meeting from the lobby of the hotel, and reported that one of the guest speakers was American pollster and former Newt Gingrich associate, Frank Luntz, whose speech “Massaging the Coservative Message for Voters” offered Civitas members tips on how to obtain a majority for Stephen Harper’s Conservative Party in the next federal elections in Canada.

Thompson reported, “Introducing Mr. Luntz yesterday, former Reform party leader Preston Manning praised the work Mr. Luntz had done for him several years ago. During his speech, Mr. Luntz mentioned that he had met with Mr. Harper — whom he referred to on a first-name basis — Friday and had posed for a picture together.”

The Civitas Society does not appear to have its own web site.

….Guy Giorno – also a member and is “very” right wing. He also ran Ernie Eves campaign…

Frank Luntz – uh, huh – where do you think Harper got the idea of the (last election hockey moms) and now soccer moms…FRANK LUNTZ..who gave Bush the security moms.

Watch out – the Republicans are coming!

Maybe Harper did, in private. We will never know as both these men are experts at the PR. game. Maybe Brodie has been given a deal he can’t refuse… I’ll leave that to your imagination, but the bottom line is Brodie is falling on his sword for the Harper ideology and the inadequacies of the PMO. Harper knows, with the motley crue in the PMO that won him a minority, a majority will never happen.

And now his replacement, the guy behind Mike Harris’s Common Sense Revolution.
Revolution, yes … Common Sense was taken to the guillotine under Harris.

If I could offer a broader perspective than the one you now have regarding biofuel.

“The research — reported Monday by the National Academy of Sciences — is the most extensive ever conducted on the potential to grow switch grass for energy. The report offers a positive outlook for cellulosic biofuels.

The study indicates an energy gain of 540 percent when processing switch grass into ethanol, compared to 130 percent to 140 percent for corn.”

http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_page=1208&u_sid=10226234

Yet even with all of this, “Rice production is projected to be up for 2008 by 12 million metric tons or 1.8 percent”.

It’s not land used for bio fuel that’s the problem, it’s demand. “The international rice market is currently facing a particularly difficult situation with demand outstripping supply and substantial price increases,”

http://deltafarmpress.com/rice/world-production-0404/

Look around the above link. There is a great deal of information.

Information on additional sources for biofuel production are becoming more known as time passes.

With biofuel, a large segment of the revenue generated could stay in Canada depending on whether Industry and Government have the foresight and the will. It can also be produced regionally according to demand.

Excellent thought for the day and possibly for the century.
Ever since Tricky Dick took the US dollar off the gold standard, the world financial markets have been stealthly sliding down a slippery slope. The FIAT currency as it’s know, is nothing more than a piece of paper that is backed by nothing and it cost nothing to print.
In short, it’s a bogus IOU and ALL the central banks in the world continue to use it as a replacement for gold, including our own B of C. (I think they’ve SOLD ALL of OUR GOLD)

By Ron p on 05.22.08 4:14 pm

• So, where did that insane PhotoShop illustration of Ignatieff and Dion on the top of this post come from? Yes, from the acne-covered, light-deprived teenaged mutants who are held in the basement of the CPC headquarters, where they maintain Conservative.ca, proud organ of the governing party. This is the site which on any given day, has three to six pictures of Stephane Dion on its home page, plus videos of the guy, plus a blog written by his dog, plus a mess of other things that 13-year-old virgins think is soooo cool.

I believe that the above-described Conservative frat boys may have served as inspiration for the song mentioned in this recent news article:

Punk band The Suicide Pilots catches eye of anti-terror cops

OTTAWA — All it takes to get noticed by Canada’s top anti-terrorism team is a shocking band name and a provocative logo.
At least, that’s the contention of The Suicide Pilots, a self-described “no-name punk band” based in Ottawa that promotes itself with a cartoon image of an anthropomorphic plane swooping toward the Parliament Buildings.

Access to Information documents released by the band’s lawyer Tuesday show that the RCMP’s Integrated National Security Enforcement Team took a look at the group last year. It started just after the band popped to brief national notoriety courtesy of its outspoken and politically active drummer, Jeffrey Monaghan.

He was never charged with anything, but his musical tastes – including a song titled “Harper Youth” – quickly attracted state scrutiny.

Hi KPN, This has absolutely nothing to do with Conservatives or Liberals. The ‘issue’ I am having is that Garth could even THINK to refer to his female EQUALS as feminazis. They took issue with him and what does he do? He referred to them as Nazis. Would he have called his male counterparts the same? Seems like when someone pisses Garth off he reacts like a spoiled child instead of considering for one second what he did was wrong. This is also about Julie…again, what did she do to Garth? He doesn’t even know this woman or her personal story.

To many people on this planet are too willing to sacrifice the dignity and respect of others for personal gain. This does not just apply to politicians. We break hearts and ruin lives and sometimes destroy our own credibility in the process. And, for what? Money? Power? In the end, I can tell you it is not worth it. I just know as I get near the end of my life, I wouldn’t want to reflect on a life time of trampling others. I am also a believer in consequence for every action taken. For every action, there is a reaction. Only those with a conscience and heart are aware of this fact. Don’t get me wrong, there are people who more than deserve public outings…full steam ahead but that is all about justice and righting wrongs and for the greater good of society. What we’ve had going on lately though is the using of innocent, or presumed innocent citizens for political gain. The whole ‘Julie/Max’ story could have been looked after on the QT, there was no reason to drag this lady through the mud of public humiliation. The ONLY reason Garth and others did this to her was to discredit a tory MP, and it was to hell with her and what this might do to her. Then, Garth called a respected career woman a weasel for reporting the story of what she was told by other Liberal MPs, who he then referred to as feminazis.

I think it would be nice if Garth just simply admitted that what he did was wrong on all counts and apologize to all concerned. Don’t you?

Leasa

When will you learn to read? The reference to feminazis was not mine, as I was quoting other bloggers who were wasting their time speculating on me. God, you are tedious. — Garth

fem-N-word

‘I worry about endorsing such language’
BY MARKUS D. ON 05.22.08 4:51 PM

Markus, I agree with you, regarding the fem-N-word. I agreed with your first comment too, and since I’d never heard of it, this morning I looked it up – - it was worse than I thought!

So I assumed Garth just HAD to be joking, and gave him the benefit of the doubt. I would certainly hope he doesn’t really use it in Reality. I hope he’ll never use it again. Feminazi has caveman-fear of women written all over it (in neon lights) so Garth must have dragged it out of the attic.

But as you say, it is very offensive, so you are correct.

I pick my battles though [like great-grandma??] I was so fed up with the misogyny of the media in the U.S. presidential campaign circa January, that I sent dozens of letters to reporters in anger. Maybe that got it out of my system, temporarily.

You are on the right track. There’s plenty of history to show that when rule is dominated by men, we lose a lot of the compassion in our society.

Barb, here is exactly what I wrote: “I’ve read all about it on blogs, which now are trying to analyze whether or not… if (c) Iggy forces encouraged me to be manly and provocative just to tick off the feminazis in the Lib caucus.” Obviously these were not my words, but my paraphrase of what blogs were saying about me. Since angry Cons apparently read this blog, I guess I should use crayons. — Garth

Clock ticking on chances to lobby

Don Martin, National Post Published: Thursday, May 22, 2008

http://www.nationalpost.com/news/story.html?id=532928

It’s a calendar date, not just a career path, that’s suddenly driving the biggest government names into early retirement, with a flood of resignations expected next month.

On July 1, the Federal Lobbying Act will impose a five-year prohibition on senior public office holders, barring them from entering the lucrative world of government arm-twisting.

If they’re still on the federal payroll the morning after Canada Day, it’s a long, cold wait until 2013 before insiders can start selling themselves as the key to government access.

Two prominent examples come to mind as the leaders of what may become an exodus from government offices to greener pastures.

The latest calendar casualty is Ian Brodie, chief of staff to the Prime Minister, who is expected to quit in late June. While he’s been talking about a return to his ivory tower roots, and says he’ll play by the new rules, leaving now means he retains the right to sell his top-level insight to the highest bidder if he changes his mind.

Of course, the highest-profile retiree of late spring will be General Rick Hillier, the influential chief of defence staff and a man whose services would be invaluable to the military machine as a consultant or lobbyist. Given that dozens of retired officers pocket salaries as lobbyists they could never have dreamed of as soldiers, it’s a safe bet Gen. Hillier will collect high six-figure earnings in retirement — once he works the golf urge out of his system.

But there’s also a subplot here that may encourage the stampede of astute insiders for the exits.

Nobody is more fixated on enforcing a regulatory separation between the state and lobbyists than Mr. Brodie’s expected replacement, Guy Giorno.

The Toronto lawyer has sold himself as the guardian of ethical lobbying for years, appearing before committees and writing articles on the industry with a particular emphasis on warning clients what to expect under the new lobbying restrictions this summer.

He knows what’s allowed by whom, so for officials contemplating a future as lobbyist, there’s little time left to get their affairs in order and call it quits.

It’s actually an interesting time for a species that appeared endangered by the election of a Conservative government known to be apprehensive about access-selling insiders. More than 140 new clients have registered with lobbyists so far this month, including former MP Don Boudria, who recently signed up to represent the Taser stun gun to government. Just in case Taser International brass don’t know this, Mr. Boudria is a born Liberal with a son trying to become a Liberal MP. And that sort of partisan resume won’t open many doors in Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day’s offices.

But perhaps the importance of hiring the right politically connected lobbyist was best illustrated by a billion-dollar bungle this month.

When Industry Minister Jim Prentice invoked the first-ever national interest veto against the sale of satellite and space robotics manufacturer MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates (MDA) to American interests, lousy lobbying was blamed.

The MDA president complained that he couldn’t get face time with Mr. Prentice to promote the sale’s merits before it was scuttled, only learning about the threat to the Alliant Techsystems takeover through the media.

Good on Mr. Prentice, because the meeting would have been highly inappropriate. Nonetheless, the situation does illustrate how a sale that seemed an easy sell to pro-business Conservatives desperately needed an expert on internal government affairs.

Getting an accurate read on the Harper government can be difficult for corporate Canada. For example, only keen observers might have detected that this government’s patriotism can make it protectionist in policy if proper steps to reduce its sovereignty anxieties are not taken.

That sort of insight might have changed the result of the now-dead sale. That is why connected lobbyists are in such high demand. And the best way to know a government inside out is to shift careers from the inside out.

Those hoping to do just that in the next five years have just five weeks to make the transition. Let the exodus of future arm-twisters begin.

Markus,

Regarding the ideas you mentioned, did you know that parents with daughters are more likely to be left-wing?

Researchers found men are more likely to switch from right to left wing, with the birth of each daughter. Parents of daughters subconsciously vote for the unselfishness of certain policies that will benefit their children. When children prosper, their chances of reproducing also flourish, and the genetic line is more likely to be continued.

A switch in voter behaviour is a “subconscious nod” toward their daughter’s future. Changing priorities after parenthood is intuitive. Every additional daughter makes you two percentage points more likely to vote for a left-wing party.

The same goes for politicians with daughters, as they are more likely to enact legislation that intuitively helps societies prosper.

And therefore your thoughts on eco-oppression.. allowing the primitive part of the brain to dominate without thought to the bigger picture. And allowing men to dominate politics through various social levers.

Humans need to think twice, about what we’re doing, and work harder to respect and encourage the balance that women bring.

What has been going on? Sorry I missed you in Vancouver this week Garth. Was is here or back in Ottowa that they got their knickers all in knots? Jane Taber (she of the rocket mouth) seems to not be scoring good marks in many books. The small dead edible animal crowd like to call her “giggles”. I’ve heard her snicker but never giggle, but what would that crowd know anyway? And poor Oliver, so old and frail and he can’t remember his lines as to who he is supposed to bash one day to the next. Nor can the the large man in the middle, Duffy. He who is hopping to be rewarded for playing nice for the winning team. Poor Duff is learning he may not be as powerful as he likes to think he is. And nor is his stalled out team. But such is life. Hiccup and it’s next week and a whole new scandal to give you heart burn.

Interesting that Brodie is leaving now. That’s right out the BC liberal neocon playbook. Wait for it…more evictions and departures, positively waves of ‘em….

Just a note regarding the word feminazi. Rush Limbaugh coined that term (no real surprise), and he has zero credibility with me.

However, women like Gloria Alred, made the term quite honest and acceptable in the States where too many hardliner feminists were literally acting like ‘feminazis.’

Funny how people get offended by the retort of people who have been offended by the actions of others who were the original offender.

As some women put it ‘These bitches have hurt us more than the men!’

#164 David Collins on 05.23.08 at 11:22 am

Bonnie.

I’d like to address your religion & climate change question. It’s fairly easy, you see, because the real question is religion vs. science. The two are mutually exclusive. Religion is antithetical to science because religion seeks to define the universe and so does science. Both can’t be right. Up until now and on every single question investigated beyond the doors of a church have proved science right and religion wrong. Seeking to explain the universe using religion has, time and again, plunged the world into ignorance. The science of climate change says that the significant rise of global temperatures that will lead to significant warming in some parts of the world and indeed could lead to an ice age (due to shutdown of thermohaline circulation from fresh water infusion into the oceans) is man made. It is happening because of what we are doing to the environment. A religious person believe it is god’s plan and even the second coming and not something that we should intervene in. A good many Christain will do nothing about global warming because they believe: 1. The Kingdom of Heaven awaits them 2. That catostrophic global warming is the HIS method of bringing the end to world and one does not go against the will of god.

Yes Garth, I am ‘tedious’. I am so completely sick and tired of all the spinning and bullshit from every corner of the political ring, that I hardly can stand to listen to the news. A while ago there was a home invasion in my quiet area of the world. An elderly couple were beaten and the elderly lady was sexually assaulted. There were three men who did this. We just had one that had his day in court. Yes he is guilty, but by the time the court finished and he was granted his double time served and all that bullshit, he will serve a further 90 days and be free. You want to talk bullshit Garth? There is a good place to start. Let’s concentrate on things that are real and matter to every day mainstream Canadians.

I am so glad that I a lot more going for me than politics and the sad state of this world and am otherwise occupied.

By David Collins on 05.23.08 11:22 am,

An interesting opinion but you have your facts wrong because of your preconceived definition of “religion.” For some people “science” can be little from a religion because it is based on assumptions that either cannot or have not been verified. For others “economics” becomes a religion for the same reason and in this case it is defined as the “invisible hand.” Whenever what we cannot empirically prove is accepted the philosophy behind it takes on all the same characteristics as a religion.

#169 Bill-Muskoka on 05.24.08 at 9:35 am

By David Collins on 05.23.08 11:22 am

Very nicely stated. I note C.B. does not concur, however, the word ‘religion’ is from the Latin root word ‘religio’ which means to bind. Therefore, all forms of belief can be defined as a religion when people accept to mandates of that belief system.

The conflict between religion, perse, and science dates back to the very early times when about the 3rd century A.D. Rome declared itself both the ruler and infallible. The battle over such subjects continues today. The adherents, on both sides, are die hards in their beliefs, and both are right and wrong at the same time IMHO.

The Literalists came in at the same time, and are alive and well yet today. but they too, have missed the reality of the science contained in the Bible, but in the original languages.

The book of Genensis, in the ancient Hebraic, clearly depicts the Big Bang Theory, but without the Bang. It simply WAS. A very had concept for people taught linear thinking to comprehend.

My research indicates it says this. God had a thought, released it from God’s hand, and the Creation simply became reality. That neither discounts the scientific evidence, nor detroys the Creation story.

Today the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) at CERN is researching the infintisimally short period between the moment of origin and the perceptable expansion of the point of beginning. It is in billionths of a second as we measure time. Which we know is relative.

To God a day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as a day. A very Relativistic statement to be sure.

If you have ever seen the movie (circa 1957) ‘Forbidden Planet’ the concept of reality being generated microsecond to microsecond as the result of a thought is easy to grasp. Such a principle also agrees with the Laws of Thermodynamics that matter can neither be created or destroyed, but only changed in form. Hence E = MC2 is correct, and that we no longer argue about.

There are many out here who are both spiritual and scientific. They are the ones who actually seek truth, and make progress in knowledge. I suggest you might enjoy two books especially.

‘The Trouble With Physics’ by Lee Smolin, and ‘The Language of God’ by Francis S. Collins, Head of the Human Genome Project.

Have a pleasant day.

#170 linda on 05.24.08 at 10:58 am

Hi Bill. I have a question for you, if I may. How do I express that I beleive in science and God? Just the fact that we use so little of our grey matter should give us pause to think ‘who are WE’ to determine if only one or the other exists? That’s what drives me nuts about certain arguments against science. MANY scientists, concede to spirituality…

#171 Bill-Muskoka on 05.24.08 at 2:04 pm

By linda on 05.24.08 10:58 am

I, personally, find quite simple. I express it openly. That is what freedom versus ‘freedumb’ is all about.

If someone chooses to disagree, that is their expression and exercise of freedom as well. I answer to God, not some person on this Earth regarding spiritual matters. My relationship with my Creator is upfront and personal. I do not rely on some man to tell me my relationship with God.

My God is much bigger than some religion, and he is the God of all who seek Truth. Religion can serve as a kindergarten to present various inights, but eventually people must grow up, and as Paul admonished ‘Get off the milk and start consuming some MEAT’, which means to search insde yourself and to hear the Spirit of God in your life. If I had to attach a label it would Gnostic, which means to know, and not to be confused with agnostic which means to not be sure.

What is the rational? Again, simple, I choose to be free, and I also ask them a simple questions ‘Who wrote the laws of physics and science?’ They were in place long before mankind came into being, and will be long after mankind has either extinguished themselves or evolved into what God intended…sentient human beings.

Remember that the term ‘human being’ refers to being sentitient. Homo Sapien refers to our species, but not all are functional human beings.

However, the Latin merges the two together, yet fails to be honest (Latin: “wise human” or “knowing human”). All one has to do is read the news, watch TV, read blogs, talk to some neighbors and we soon realize the Latin is not very accurate.

My sincere saying is ‘Religion will tell you what to think, but philosophy will teach you how to think.’ there is a huge difference.

I hope that enlightens you?
