In the News: Political flyers crash and burn
* Alberta MP’s mailings unwelcome
On Tuesday morning Esther and her crack team of information commandos launched an email blast to let people know Stephane Dion is coming to Halton in two weeks to do a show with me. We sent a note of invitation to the thousands and thousands and thousands of people who have contacted me over the last three years about whatever.
Here was my logic: It’s a free country, dammit. I’m an elected representative of the people. One of the two men who will be prime minister after the next election is coming here for an open event. He will speak from the heart. He will answer any question. And anybody can come to the event, regardless of their beliefs. This is called democracy.
So, we invited one. We invited all. We invited known Libs. We invited big Cons. We invited people who have said they wouldn’t cross the street to have a whiz on me. We invited supporters. We invited bloggers. We invited everyone – just as a few days ago I invited everybody here.
The response, I must tell you, have been avalanchey. A torrent of responses seems to suggest tickets to this thing will be hot commodities in a few days. (I just have to hold the news from Dion, so he keeps that underestimated wimpy thing of his going, and doesn’t go all rock star on me.)
So, you might be interested in this. Just before 5 pm, big-name, famous Blogging Tory Steve Janke emailed me from his Berry and said, “How did you get the email addresses for the mailout? From the blog’s commenting system? From a database of Liberal supporters?”
I responded: “My Christmas card list.” (Mostly true.) His Jankiness replied, “How do I get on that list.” I answered, “Be much nicer to me.”
Four hours later, Janke’s blog – the one with the deranged rodent on the front – carried an epic piece with the headline, “Has Garth Turner broken the rules regarding his email marketing service?” (The heading was later altered to read, “Garth Turner: Spamming for Stephane Dion?”) The boffo indepth report said “at least two” bloggers had already decried my Dion email blast, and that it all raised serious questions about the source of my data. Janke went back to examine the e-Christmas card I sent last December, and concluded that at least some of the people who received my seasonal greeting had made the list because they’d commented on this blog.
Oh, the horror. Imagine coming to my blog, posting some partisan crap anonymously, then skulking off – only to be smitten weeks or months later with a Christmas card wishing you well!
In any case, Janke indicates he’s contacted the company from which we licence our email blast program, obviously with a view to shutting down my promotional efforts by alleging we’ve snorfled email addresses. Or maybe he’s just outraged he’s been left off. And here, you thought it was a free country.
I mention this because Mr. Janke and a few dozen other slavering Conservative bloggers love to slag me when I criticize MPs sending taxpayer-funded mailers to tens of millions of homes as unsolicited election propaganda. And yet when we send an invitation to an open meeting with the next prime minister to an electronic list of people who have previously contacted me, at no cost to anyone, well, bring down the hammer of Internet protocol. Unleash the investigative beavers!
“There is circumstantial evidence to suggest,” the rodent hisses through his hideous buck teeth, “that at least some of the addresses in Garth Turner’s Christmas Card list might have been pulled from a comment system of his blog.”
Hey, Con babies, want a solution? Stay away from this blog!
In other news…
The Conservative anti-Garth web site in Halton at the same time is calling for a protest of the Dion event! “Hopefully someone will step forward to protest this event…people at the center’s driveway would be more than enough to get the local and national presses (sic) attention. I’d love to see Garth’s ‘Special Day’ get rained on.”
I love a protest, don’t you?
See you in the driveway, boys.

Janke should be thankful he doesn’t get mail bombed .
I received two invites which I appreciate.
Janke is a brain dead blogging idiot who deserves no respect .
Garth … I think they were planning to demonstrate against you as their Liberal MP .. and use the Dion event as their opportunity to attack you politically.
I hope you have arranged for proper security for Dion and yourself when you show up in public … otherwise you should call it off and not endanger Dion.
Btw … is your offer to provide a limo for me still open ..???!!!
Esther emailed me. I checked the address she used and for the sake of this hee haw Janke-Ass, whoever he is, her email came to the address hubby and I have always used mutually for all email correspondence, not the email address our computer tech advised we should have for internet use.
The nerve of these assholes who only want to shut down free speech.
Hey, the view from the ultra far wing makes everyone look like lefties, even Tories.
The brassy, bossy, nose in everyone’s business, sue everybody nutbars make me sick. People like that are sociopaths.
Garth, keep up the great work. You are driving them crazy.
Or should I say…crazier?
What-a-bunch-a pathetic mean-spirited nasties. Gad – how do they stand themselves. Not a shred of humanity amongst the whole lot-a-them.
Garth,What you’ve done is apparently against your terms of agreement with your provider CC (Constant Contact). It’s called unsolicited spam.
Kinda like what Dion’s done with his stealing of the registered trademark “Green Shift”.
When will you Liberals learn that you do not have the right to break agreements, laws etc.?
Looks like Liberals learned nothing from Adscam.
Btw … is your offer to provide a limo for me still open ..???!!!

Hey Garth does PIPEDA not apply to elected members of parliament and/or the Liberal Party of Canada?
Thank you for the invitation to your event. I am here daily but only rarely comment because I don’t want to get caught up in some of the exchanges going on. I do however get an immense amount of thought provoking ideas to reflect on and have learned a lot by visiting here. I didn’t think I would be able to make it but as luck has it it looks like I will be training in Missisauga that day and hope to make it. I would love to meet some of the people here and see what you and the leader have to say. If it is too full that would be great for you. I do appreciate the thoughtfullness of the invite. Oh and I was equally impressed when I received my Christmas card as well.
“What they do not want you to see” — One reason CRAP prefers to keep Cdns. in the dark is because light exposes all the deceptions, cheating and lies they are guilty of, yet there are plenty who are not even aware of all this.
Whether people read Garth’s blog or not, truth is like a never-ending water-spring — plug one hole here, another pops open.
Soon, it becomes a flood of bad info. spreading about CRAP, and they can’t do a damned thing about it.
This is why the Libs. don’t need to do that much campaigning — CRAP is doing it for them, through their cock-ups; all that need be done is to point these gaffes, preferably by folk who are not associated with any party.
Call the election prior to Xmas, have time to enjoy the holidays then wipe the slate clean — CRAP is dead / Thank God!
It is so funny to note CRAP’s reactions when you get under their skin — they truly are a bunch of loud-mouthed yahoos, who still don’t know the difference between their collective arses and eyeballs!

Questions for you Charlie, what do trolls drive? Trolleys? If so, are they trackless busgineers or just wired bus drivers?
[wot wit wit wot!]
Candid Reflections, 11:25 pm
Hello Candid.
First, Trolls are here purely to drive the rest of us on to greater heights, and they are doing a stunningly good job — let them bleat and whine all they want, as it’s more ammunition for the election.
Second is slightly more difficult.
I venture to say it would be a combination of Track-Truck-Brolly-Lollies, with plenty of wankiejankies thrown in for good measure, then topped off with a healthy dose of wired-zoo-tweenies.
All wireless, of course as scarecrows are the only things which are known to stimulate them!
[wot wit wit wot!] — Trolls only know neanderthal language — this is light years ahead of them!
I hope you have arranged for proper security for Dion and yourself when you show up in public … otherwise you should call it off and not endanger Dion.

By barb the proofreader on 08.06.08 12:45 am
Sorry Barb. You can not get “crazier” than that “S–t house” rodent!
LOL
Garth, you scare the S–t out of them.
Keep up the good work.
I think that this raises a couple issues.
First, who pays for the site? If it’s paid for out of your constituency budget, I think Janke has a point. If it’s paid for out of your own pocket, not so much. (Don’t say that the sending of email is “at no cost to anyone”… if that is the case, please let me know who your hosting company is, as I’d love to save a few bucks.)
Second, it highlights the glaring lack of a privacy policy on this site. If you are going to collect private personal information about visitors who leave comments, there should be a clear policy in place that governs how and under what circumstances that information will be used. Will you reserve the right to sell email address to a spammer? To a legitimate company? Will it be shared with the Government of Canada? The Liberal Party? What measures are in place to protect that information?
A privacy policy does not need to be a complex technical document, just a short note that clearly spells out what personal information you collect about your visitors and how you will use it. That way, if issues like this come up, you can just point to the privacy policy and say “Hey, you knew (or ought to have known) when you left a comment on my blog that I would use that information to invite you to political events.”
It just makes good sense to have a clear guideline in place for all to see. That way, these issues don’t come up.
Can hardly wait for the event. Garth says I can bring signs too! I brought a couple of Dion’s signs home from the convention. Finally a chance to use them! And I think I have a little green scarf signed by him too.
More importantly I’m interested in the questions to be posed by others and the answers from Stephane Dion and Garth Turner. I’ve never had much luck getting to the microphones at these events but I’ll try.
Off to compose my question(s)…
Think Green, Vote Red as the youth are now saying.
One more thing…the bigger the protest – the more important the meeting, in my opinion.
Keep ‘em on the run, Garth!
Thanks for the invite Garth, but unfortunately being out here in Saskatoon makes it a little hard to get to Halton. Good luck with the event, I’m sure it will go great. Mr. Dion came out here last year and was top notch.
p.s. way to save a bunch of trees with the email invites – unlike those disgusting 10%.
I even got the invite – but, I must decline – as I would not use my carbon footprint to go to an event that will be nothing more than an pre-election stump. Mr. Dion has not answered not one question honestly and openly yet – so it would be just a waste of my time and effort.
And besides, Garth, I don’t think you want your liars, con-bots, neo-cons, bush-lapdogs, republicans, cave-men/women to attend your enlightenment.
But thanks for the invite. Cheers.
Not sure what the big deal is. I think that guy takes himself too seriously. I love reading blogs, but I never read him, he’s pretty boring, really. Why is Janke “angry” anyways? He needs to lighten up some… Maybe he needs a hobby or something.
You invited people to a meeting with your party’s leader, how does that constitute spam? What you guys are doing is pretty admirable, actually. If I lived close to Halton, I’d make the trip to meet him and ask him questions, and that’s coming from someone who will never vote Liberal.
If you don’t want people sending stuff to your email address, don’t give it out. It’s really not that complicated, don’t you learn that in “Internet 101″? Must be a slow news day, or else there’s nothing more important to be “angry” about than an email…
“I just have to hold the news from Dion”. Well, Garth, hopefully he reads your blog and is now aware. LOL.
What’s this about ISPs charging per site? That’s outrageous. Is there a link to the info? I’ve pretty much had it with Bell and its convoluted service provision but our choices are limited to equally lousy options from all service providers. Rogers, Telus, Bell: they’re all gougers in one way or another.
I recieved an invitation and I would like to have gone to meet you and M Dion.I was pleased to get the invite but will not be able to drive the 2200Km to get there. Good luck with the meeting and keep up the great effort on our behalf.
Oh I can’t tell you how much I hope this happens especially with the press coming to the event…I wonder if this has been sanctioned by the PMO…
I have had this much fun since we try to emulate James Dean running cars off a cliff…only we didn’t use cars…

My GANG always laughed when we were under intense fire, and I’d shout out … Awright, where the EFF are the State Troopers?

On the lighter side, I just read an article about Rita MacNeil’s reaction to learning that the RCMP had a file on her way back when. In typical Rita style, she found it amusing and she even cracked a joke about it. Obviously, Rita is a happy, peaceful lady who is comfortable in her own skin. She is one of the many symbols of Canada of whom I am incredibly proud. What a great lady.
Garth – I came to this blog after recently reading one of your books about the economy. After subscribing to the RSS feed, I actually had a few messages that were informative and thoughtful. I asked my mom more about you, as she is in your riding – she just snorted and said that you are “all over the place”.
You condemn the Tories for behaviour and opinions you frequently demonstrate yourself. You stated – frequently – in the book I read that Canadians “don’t need more tax”, and yet now you throw your support behind the new “carbon tax”.
I am so completely disappointed, and it just confirms in my mind that Canadians don’t need to elect a “new” government – the system truly needs a complete overhaul.
It’s not a “new tax” but a shifting of existing taxes. Open your eyes. — Garth
Politic-speak: I just read a blurb from Sarah Bain in which she used the ubiquitous “Canadians are” phrase. All too often, I hear politicians or party members use “Canadians want”, “Canadians are” as the beginning of a statement. To be honest, it annoys me because the use of the phrase implies that the person knows this for a fact and that he or she is encompassing all Canadians. Well, nobody asked this Canadian. What I’d rather read or hear is “I believe that Canadians…” or “Polls SUGGEST that Canadians…”. It may seem like splitting hairs but the phrase has a tendency to appear to be factual when it may not be factual.

Well, my mother is a senior and her name is Helen and according to her, she knows best (I think it’s a “mother thing”). There is an old saying that refutes put-downs about old wives’ tales: “how do you think they got to be old wives”. Elderly women are very wise and perceptive.
That being said, these people who publicly try to speak for all Canadians…are not senior women. If they were, I’d be inclined to believe them. I agree that elderly women certainly know what they’re talking about.
Gee, an MP that communicates in an open forum. Oh the humanity!
If I got a note that the PM was coming to town and I had the opportunity to ask him a NON scripted question, I’d show up too.
I think the cons are just pissed that they tried to hide a handful of negative reports, and it didn’t work so now they are grabbing at staws by complaining up a public meeting… wouldn’t want that in a democracy would we.
Devin, if I may: All MPs have a budget for communications and Garth is within TB guidelines for using his fund to pay for his web site. As far as comparing Garth’s invitation by e-mail to the hard copy received by regular mail, it’s a bit like comparing apples and oranges although I can see some connection between the two.
Garth’s e-mail was an invitation to attend the town hall with Dion. Now, the meeting may turn out to be a campaign stump but it may also turn out to be what Garth says that it will be. I cannot predict the future so I won’t say one way or the other.
The hard copy which is received by (it seems) everybody in the country but me, is not an invitation but a political commentary or a campaign effort. They are not, technically, the same thing.
Before you deem me to me one of Garth’s sycophants, think again. I am not one of them. I merely find this blog and the comments to be interesting. Besides, Garth is not even my MP.
You people are missing the point. There was a huge lack of reponce so Garth had to invite everybody.

Hi Catherine on 08.06.08 5:09 am,
It’s still a free Country and you are just as entitled to ‘enlightenment’ as the rest of us.
In case you mist it, it’s a public meeting, YOU and anyone are welcome to come and find out for yourself, fist hand what Mr. DionMP has to speak about and his thoughts/answers to yours and others question. It’s a pretty big hall, not far from my place, come early to get a good seat. You could let Mr. TurnerMP know if you are coming and how many friends are with you. You could car pool and keep your carbon footprint down, if it really the reason to not make the effort for yourself to find out first hand. How else do you think you are going to make an informed decision in the voting both?
When was the last time PMSH or your MP had a public meeting were you could ask them any questions and here there answerer for your self?
If you’ve never been to see Mr. DionMP speak and answerer question, Then how can you be so sure your statement is a truly a valid one; “Mr. DionMP has not answered not one question honestly and openly yet.”
If you don’t come yourself, how will you now for yourself, that the stuff PMSH gang is feeding you is even close to reality?
Again it’s a public meeting open to all, including YOU and your friends. You can even ask your own questions and hear for yourself what they have to say, and his ideas to help make Canada an even better place to live in for everyone, including you and your family.
Do you real think that PMSH cares about you and your family’s future?
Have you been paying attention?
What kind of world does you and your family what to try and grow up in?
Are you so sure you are well informed?
Your statement tells me that you are not, and you know it. But still would rather not make much effort to find out for yourself. ‘Believing in myths to avoid the discomfort of thought’, is just like sticking your head the sand and hoping for the best for yourself.
If you don’t start to take charge of your future well being, you do so at your own peril.
If you are so sure that you are well informed and your information is infallible, why do you seem to spend so much time on this Blog trying to justify your beliefs? You need to get out more, and even get to some event to meet, hear and ask question of all the leaders of all the Parties. How else are you going to know that you are making the best choice for you and your family at the next election?
I’m not telling you who to vote for, only you can decide that. But don’t you think you owe it to yourself and your family, to get the best information from all sides, to even find out first hand?
How else will you know for sure?
Certainly not by simple being feed the stuff PMSH gang send/feed you!
You need to start asking yourself why you say what you do about Mr. DionMP.
Have you meet and heard him for yourself?
And why you still think that PMSH is good for you and your family’s future?
Are you really well informed?
Have you been paying attention?

I have always gotten a kick out of seniors. I visit a lot of small towns on my road trips and I always make it a point to find a spot where seniors are gathered and shoot the breeze for a while. There is a lot of experience in those folks. Senior ladies who have experienced a war or two and the depression have a lot to offer.

Quick question for you Garth.
How many (and what are they about) lawsuits is there involving the Liberal Party of Canada and the Liberal candidates, the Conservative Party of Canada and the Conservative candidates?
I ask because every day it seems someone is suing someone else.
Cons against Libs
Libs against Cons
Green Shift against Libs
Cons against Election Canada
some blogers against you, Garth
There must be at least three dozen cases involving either one of the two big parties or one of its 308 candidates.
Garth,
In your riding do the neo-cons have their own teeth?
Garth … forum trools are accusing me of vile actions against Dion, but you know that’s not true. However to be safe from any anti-Garth demonstrations, you should organize a counter-demonstration with your supporters .. and the forum trools who attend could be the sacrificial lambs … ya think ??!!!
It’s not a “new tax” but a shifting of existing taxes. Open your eyes. — Garth
Here is what Martha Hall-Findlay had to say today about the Green Shift carbon tax in her clarification statement to Steve Janke:
http://stevejanke.com/archives/270097.php
Assuming that you strive for accuracy, I have the following clarifications to make to one of your recent posts. You referred to comments on the Green Shift I made at an event, where I was discussing the impact of the Green Shift on the environment.
Adding a carbon tax to the burning of fossil fuels will, absolutely, have the effect of reducing emissions; I have never said otherwise. It has been demonstrated repeatedly, around the world, that adding to market forces is the most effective way to affect behaviour. Those of us old enough remember significant fuel-reduction behaviour due to the 1970s oil crisis.
There will be reductions in emissions from the Green Shift because we know that people will change their consumption patterns if polluting behaviours cost more. This is already occurring, to some extent, due to other factors in today’s market – namely rapidly increased oil prices. The Green Shift, by adding a price on the burning of other carbon dioxide emitters, – coal is a prime and very polluting example – will reduce emissions even more.
My point is that both increased market oil prices and the imposition of a price on the burning of other fossil fuels, when working together, will reduce green-house gas emissions even further. It will, however, be difficult to determine the exact proportions of the reduction attributable to each.
Reducing emissions, helping people deal with immediate energy costs through significant income tax cuts, and encouraging investment in green technology and renewable energy sources, all at the same time – it sure sounds pretty good to me.
Finally, a picky point perhaps, but for future reference, my last name is Hall Findlay, not just Findlay.
Thank you.

No mention of “shifting of existing taxes”…. only the punitive effects of the Dion Liberal Carbon Tax. It would be helpful to Canadians if you and your Liberal colleagues would get together to somehow agree on a consistent and unified interpretation of Dion’s Green Shift and it’s massive tax implications to the Canadian economy.

Weaken Ottawa, hobble the nation
http://www.thestar.com/comment/article/245897
Here we go again. Fresh from pocketing Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s reckless move last year to “recognize that the Québécois form a nation” within Canada, and having wrung an extra $700 million from Ottawa in equalization payments, Quebec Premier Jean Charest’s government is at it again, lobbying for more.
Clement’s Insite attack leaves WHO red-faced–ANDRÉ PICARD–G&M–Wed Aug 6 2008
“Insite opened as a pilot project in 2003 under a special exemption from federal drug laws, but Ottawa had refused to say whether it would extend the exemption when it expired in June. Before the deadline arrived, the B.C. Supreme Court ruled that parts of federal drug laws related to trafficking and possession are unconstitutional and gave the government a year to rewrite them. Mr. Justice Ian Pitfield said laws that prevent people suffering from the disease of addiction from accessing such a service infringe on their right to life, liberty and security of the person.
“Mr. Clement said Ottawa will appeal the decision, meaning the fate of Insite will likely be decided by the Supreme Court of Canada.”

My Canada is a DEMOCRACY that allows free speech and sometimes that means LISTENING to a point of view I don’t agree with.
Does that mean I have to shut that person down permanently? NO-It means we can discuss the ISSUE and then compromise or agree to disagree in my version of civil society.
But when someone tries to take away my freedom to associate or to express my opinion as is my RIGHT to do so in Canada. I take offense and feel outraged and betrayed by a political party who when they were sworn in as a government promised to uphold the rights and freedoms we hold dear and are presently fighting for in foreign wars.
Garth your meeting exemplifies MY rights as a CANADIAN to associate and express and when I participate in this blog I expect that you will keep me informed about issues I have stated are vital to my concern.

Dear Garth and Esther,
I was delighted to be one of those who received the invitation to the Town Hall. If it were possible, I would certainly be there. However, it is a long way from Calgary, so I will have to content myself with being there in spirit and reading all about it on this blog.
I attended your Town Hall meeting in Calgary last summer, Garth, and was very favourably impressed! I have followed Mr. Dion’s career ever since he entered politics. He has shown himself to be a man of courage, integrity and wisdom. The two of you together will be a powerful combination of openness, integrity, courage and leadership.
I’ve taken some time to inform myself on the Green Shift and am convinced it is the way to go.
Have a great time on August 20th. I will certainly be with you in spirit.
And, BTW, I’m happy to be on your Christmas card list
Is Harper an economist or not?
If he is, how then, is an economist defined and by whom?
Well, Pyotr, I’m not all that far from senior citizenship. While I was in university, I realized that no matter which party is in power, we citizens will be shafted one way or another by every level of government. And so I began to save for my retirement. I bought my first RRSP while I was in university. It wasn’t much but it was a start. I worked two part-time jobs to give me full-time equivalent hours so that I could graduate debt-free and with money in the bank.
I can only hope that we eventually get a government which will give us citizens what we want instead of what the party wants to give us. I have almost no faith in any level of government because of the lies upon lies upon lies perpetuated by each and every one of the political parties in Canada.
In my opinion, our political system is rife with corruption, deceit, and greed on all fronts and at all levels.

He has a degree, not worth the paper it is written on ,from the University of Calgary .
All he learned was obsolete theories that have been disproven time and again in the real world .
I think the Conservatives should be more concerned with the whereabouts of their leader and how he is received. Harper was in BC over the weekend and was heckled at a celebration in Surrey over his Komagata Maru comments and then he was heckled some more at BC’s 150th celebration in Victoria. Also disappointing is the fact that the Pride Parade for Vancouver drew half a million people this year and Harper was too timid to show up, yet was in town. All the PR the CPC can buy only showcases how phony this government is. It’s time to talk policy.
Oh and today in Vancouver news has hit the streets of a decline in real-estate, however modest. The first decline since the late 90′s for us. Listings way up and prices just coasting. Some real-estate agents (who are often the most upbeat) suggest a 1% drop per month for the next 4-5 months (at least) for the region in prices across the board. And the traditional slow season Oct-Mar has not even started…

Garth … please read Martha H-F’s clarification to Steve Janke … and nowhere does she call it a “shifting of taxes” as you are promulgating. She clearly separates the function of the carbon tax and the income tax credit.
This is the confusion that is being sown by Dion’s Green Shift. Other Liberal MPs are also seemingly confused, and you know that too. Perhaps Dion will unify the Liberal message now that he has returned from his vacation.

I’m known to be unrelenting in a verbal shakedown when I meet the corrupt face-to-face at political events. As of this moment C.R.A.P./S.H.I.T.’S have nowhere to run.
With the teams we’ve been able to organize, I expect we will have considerable success in taking our message forward. Most of them have been hurt very badly by Harper’s Betrayal on Income Trusts. It’s an issue that just won’t go away.
When The Hon. Garth enters the room, none of us has to be reminded to, “please be upstanding.”

While I agree with most of what you write, I think you are wrong here. In fact the theories work quite well if you are among the mountebanks who control the economic game and are disproportionately rewarded by it. I would recommend anyone to check out Naomi Klein’s, ‘The Shock Doctrine’ or any of the books written by Linda McQuaig. Both writers have devoted a lot of time and effort in drawing back the curtain on the workings of the so-called free market.

You condemn the Tories for behaviour and opinions you frequently demonstrate yourself. You stated – frequently – in the book I read that Canadians “don’t need more tax”, and yet now you throw your support behind the new “carbon tax”.

Unfortunately, the opportunity to be corrupt is built into our system. A small segment of those elected to office are inherently unable to resist the temptation and are wholly corrupt; when caught they are shameless. A larger number engage in acts of varying levels of venality; when caught they are embarrassed. And a small group are completely incorruptible.
I believe it was Sir John A who opined that a solid majority and a surplus in the treasury would debauch a parliament composed of archangels.

You have to contribute to the Liberal Victory Fund, they ask a very modest monthly contribution, to RSVP or you can pay for a ticket at the door.
I have made contributions to the Federal Greens in 2005/2006. In 2007 I contributed to Garth coffers. In 2008, I took Garth’s advice and joined the Liberals as the best option available to get real environment change and action. It was a bitter pill to swallow, being a former PC Conservative, but Harper isn’t not my vision of the Canadian Progressive Conservatives.
Anyways, I’m sure Garth or Esther and also provide you with more details about the other get together.

Helen Hunt. Man, she’s gorgeous. Sorry, just had to say that. I loved her in As Good As It Gets. She reminds me of Jodie Foster who is a perfect combination of beauty, brains (she is a graduate of Yale or Harvard (I always confuse the two)), talent, and the good sense to stay out of the public eye as much as is possible in Hollywood.
3.1 The Extent and Rate of Deforestation
Today, roughly 39 million square kilometers (29 percent) of the world’s land surface is under forest cover (FAO 2000), and of that 28 million square kilometers is in so-called “closed forests” of 40 percent canopy cover or above (Singh et al. 2001). Since the end of the last ice age, approximately half the world’s forest cover has been lost, most of it due to the expansion of human activities and settlements (Kapos 2000). In terms of primary forest, in contrast to secondary or other successional forests, much less remains. The World Resources Institute (1997) estimates that only one-fifth of the world’s original forest cover remains, largely in blocks of undisturbed frontier forests in the Brazilian Amazon and boreal areas of Canada and Russia.
http://sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu/tg/guide_glue.jsp?rd=lu&ds=3
Gentlepeople, I think this is one of several major reasons we have rising CO2} levels in the atmosphere. The World’s forests have been decimated thus removing the major mechanism for recapturing Carbon and releasing Oxygen. The Green Shift should include replanting Canada’s forests with sustainable species of trees in a bio-diverse plan rather than a mono culture agro-industrial gulag.
While this will by no means solve the World wide problem, we need to get our own act in order before we demand that others do so too.
Carbon capture via Mother Nature’s way must be one of the main steps employed to reverse the current trends. Without this step being employed in a major way, the other steps will not be sufficient to guarantee success. We will always need lumber and pulp. Planting trees now for the benefit of the atmosphere also ensures future mature trees for commercial use later. This is also where tax incentive regimes should be focused.
Ask the scientists for their assessment of this idea and require them to document their reports.
I’m surprised one of Harpers trolls hasn’t used the line ” Isn’t that what our Canadian forces are fighting for over in Afghanistan? That we may go and protest at a Dion-Turner public meeting Come on Bocanut and Harry, we are missing the old rah, rah,.
William Laidlaw, what you say is sadly true. To make matters worse, when caught, today’s corrupt shift the blame, refuse to accept responsibility, and are unapologetic. What makes it even more disgusting is that we look good compared with some other countries.
I am a proud Canadian and a happy Canadian. At the same time, I am ashamed of our Parliament. Even if we had an uncorrupt government, I’d still be ashamed after watching QP. What a bunch of ignorant and immature jerks. I wish it wasn’t available to the public; something should be kept out of the public eye and QP behaviour is one of them.
Canada’s position on the World Poker Table:
I’ve been reading a lot of Conservative bragging about Canada being back, being back on the World Stage. As for Parry Sound-Muskoka’s resident (well he has a cottage there, anyway) brain Tony Clement and his pronouncements to the WHO today, I feel deeply ashamed that someone so profoundly ignorant of health policy has a voice on the international stage.
His Wikipedia entry is interesting – easing in two-tier health care so that only the rich survive, backing of racist bigots from South Africa during his student days, and much, much more.
Tony (and his Con buddies) aren’t interested in harm reduction. They think that anyone who uses drugs should die and “decrease the surplus population”, just like Dicken’s Scrooge before his enlightenment.
There are lots of people addicted to drugs in Canada today – insulin being a prime example. What Tony as his lemon-sucking, disapproving types don’t like is that the restricted drugs once provided a high for their unfortunate dependents.
Now, of course, the drugs only keep these people from feeling mortally sick.
So, even if you don’t have a compassionate bone in your body, look at it this way. These people are sick. If they can’t get well, then they should at least not get sicker (safe injection sites).
I’d go completely for decriminalizing and controlling drugs so that people don’t have to prostitute themselves or commit crimes to get money for the stuff.
Afghanistan is producing more than they can use at the moment. Buy it and provide it on prescription and increase programs for those who want to get off the stuff. And organized crime loses a big chunk of their backing money.
The Netherlands has been doing this for years. The addicts in the program are indistinguishable from anyone else in the country. They take their medicine and then go off to work. You can actually do that if you don’t have to turn tricks with some deranged perv or plan and execute a robbery or mugging to get money for the next hit.
Now, THAT’s harm reduction, for them and for the rest of the citizens.
Two-tier Tony reminds me of some of the other uptight Cons who would restrict medical marijuana. Heaven forbid that someone with a chronic or terminal illness should actually feel a little bit good, or at least not so godawfully bad.
It also reminds me of some of the anal-retentive doctors who tried to restrict pain-relieving opiates to those in the last stages of terminal cancer because they ran the chance of becoming addicted. (Yes, I actually heard that argument from one doctor when I was a student.)
The rest of the world must wonder what has happened to this country. The gun-happy, war-loving Harper, the finance minister who managed to put Ontario into deficit before going on and repeating the astounding trick for the rest of the country, a health minister who thinks that only the rich should live and be healthy, a public security minister who thinks the universe in only 6,000 years old and that the height of achievment during his tenure is running the Boston marathon, a natural resources minister who backs the mining and export of deadly asbestos to developing countries.
Where in the name of all that’s holy did they GET these people?

Garth, those 10%ers can only be sent out to 10% of a riding? I have recieved 14 different ones in a 4 month span. Does that mean that since I recieved 14 being only allowed to send to 10% of one riding they have mailed out 140 different 10%ers to our riding, or is the area I live in recieving all of the 10% fliers?

Well, Pyotr, the behaviour is so disgraceful that it flies in the face of Canada’s reputation as a nation of polite people. It really boggles my mind that people like this are given the title “Honourable”. Alfonso Gagliano is “honourable”. Jean Chretien is “honourable?. At best these folks in the House behave like brats in QP. You know, sometimes ignorance is bliss and I’d sure wish I had never seen QP behaviour.
Honourable, indeed. My neighbour’s golden is infinitely more honourable than these jokers.

CANADA: Video marks 15 years since primate’s apology to Aboriginals
Ali Symons–Episcopal Life–Aug 06, 2008
[Anglican Church of Canada] “On August 6, 1993, Archbishop Michael Peers, then-Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, stood before the National Native Convocation in Minaki, Ontario and apologized for his church’s involvement in residential schools. The Anglican Church of Canada had helped administer around three dozen schools between 1820 and 1969, and many students had suffered emotional, physical, and sexual abuse.”
Peers spoke these words: “I am sorry, more than I can say, that we were part of a system that took you and your children from home and family. I am sorry, more than I can say, that we tried to remake you in our image, by taking from you your language and your signs of identity.”

I am ashamed of our Parliament. Even if we had an uncorrupt government, I’d still be ashamed after watching QP. What a bunch of ignorant and immature jerks. I wish it wasn’t available to the public; something should be kept out of the public eye and QP behaviour is one of them.

I agree somewhat with the first part of this and totally with the last two sentences.
I would add to this that people with addictions be treated with orthomolecular medicine which the pharmaceutical companies would never teach to medical students. Of course, it is the pharmaceutical companies who are now teaching our docs-to-be.
http://www.healthrecovery.com/HRC_2006/AlcoholTreatment.htm . This treatment center gets an 85% cure rate for alcoholism as compared to AA’s 20%. They heal the damaged brain with nutrition and supplements. No pharmaceuticals.

PM ‘tricked us’ over Komagata Maru apology

“Updated August 06, 2008 12:06 PM An apology last weekend to Indo-Canadians for the Komagata Maru incident was not good enough, community members say.”
“Indo-Canadian radio stations are reporting they’ve been told no further apology regarding the Komagata Maru will be forthcoming.
Calls by The Leader to the Conservative Party of Canada have not yet been returned.”

There is a lot more to harm reduction than supplying drugs. If that were even close to accurate we wouldn`t have the drug problem we have now. Harm reduction starts with the drugging of our children. One only has to check the number of meth addicts that were Ritalin (speed) adicted as children.
I am a little shocked at how one of the regular cheerleaders would hold the children is such blatant and callous disregard you would leave out how these people that can`t cure themselves became like they are.
So who do we blame, the drug companies that kickbacked to the schools? School boards? Organized crime expanding their consumer base? heck no lets blame the cons.
Ritalin, so much easier than parenting.

Its just like the weather forecast. When they say POP 10%, that means they expect 10% of the area to see rain, not that the whole area has a 10% chance. They can’t determine which 10% will get rain.
Hence, when they send these 10% out, only 10% of the riding get them. Now, I’m sure they have a database based on postal code of who is and is not a CPC supporter. I’ll bet they send them to those postal codes that don’t show a proportionate number of those supporters. Hence they target non CPC supporting areas. And as a result, you get lots of them while others get none!
By Marc on 08.06.08 2:53 pm,
As I understand it from one of the news articles you can get three a week, every week of the year, as long as they are different.
The question I have is how is the 10 per cent calculated? Is it ten per cent of the number of voters in the riding of the MP that sends them out, ten per cent of the voters in the riding of another MP that is being targeted, or 10 per cent of voters in all ridings in Canada?
Even if it is 10 per cent of a riding three times a week that means that 30 per cent of the riding could be covered in one week and 100 per cent of the riding in less than a month. That means that one household could get around that 12 of these partisan mailouts a year.
It is evident that particular ridings are being targeted which means that they are partisan election materials targeted against certain MPs.
The ability to send out these kinds of mailings is an abuse of power. Private clubs, which is what political parties really are, should not have this kind of access to public funds. It is evident that it is not the individual MPs that are sending out these fliers but the parties.
It should be noted that Jack Layton has refused to condemn the practice.
This abuse of our tax money makes me extremely angry.

Not to mention, its obvious that the 10%’s are giving the CPC bad publicity, for wasting taxpayers money. And taxpayers, who are also the voters, don’t like that
So, when Mr. Dion becomes PM, send the CPC the bill!
How about we have a private members bill to outlaw 10% ers and anyone who votes against the bill, we vote out of office…I think it is great, even my neighbour who is a staunch CPC supporter is really annoyed at this waste of money…so I hope they continue…it just may backfire big time.

I would go one step further and allow M.P.s to send as many 10% as they want providing they get paid out of their M.P.s budget. Then at the very least the 10%ers would be much more informative, and much less frequent. It might work with a carbon tax, to reduce emmissions with a cost put on carbon, so it should work equally as well with M.P.s using their own budget money to reduce the amount of waste in their own offices.
When I vote I am pretty undecided on who to vote for until election day. Then I usually vote for the person who bothered me the least in the run up to election day. Our last mayor after I told the polling company calling on behalf of the mayor that I intended to vote for him again, called everyday for 2 weeks. On election day I voted for the woman running to unseat the mayor as did my wife. The mayor lost by 52 votes and since my wife and I swung from being pissed off, our 2 votes cost him 4. If 24 other households voted for the woman as well fro the smae reasons all that advertising backfired on the former mayor. He was last seen running for the Federal Liberal party finishing a distant 3rd.

Dion has until end of next year to find $690,000
by DavidAkin on Wed 06 Aug 2008 03:27 PM EDT
http://davidakin.blogware.com/blog/_archives/2008/8/6/3827352.html
Chief Electoral Officer Marc Mayrand issued his ruling today [PDF here] on an application by Stphane Dion’s Liberal leadership campaign for an extension to pay off campaign debts.
Like he did for other leadership candidates, Mayrand gave Dion until the end of 2009 to pay off debts that, as of June 3, added up to $690,000.
If Dion’s team takes all of the extension to pay that off, he will most certainly be fighting the next general election campaign while fighting to pay off his leadership campaign.
Dion’s team is looking to pay off the following creditors:
* Stephanos Mamdouh – 2 loans totalling $320,000
* TD Canada Trust – $150,000
* Marc de la Bruyere – $70,000
* Stephen Bronfman – $50,000
* Salvatore Guerrera – $50,000
* Remi Nault – $50,000
………………………………….
Surely Dion’s large outstanding debt is indicative of lost confidence in him by the Liberal party grassroots faithful .. who are either tapped out or are just waiting for the next election.
Garth … better put the squeeze on all who attend the August 20th Town Hall Bash …!!!
I received “2″ of the flyers today – two in one day. Now, I have 6 for this summer alone and my MP was away for a month. I wished I had saved them all (my husband threw a whole bunch out). 6 in 1/2 summer – unbelievable. I will keep saving them and then making my case to our local newspaper and I’ll keep writing the editor. After August -the editor will have my letter and I anticipate responses as my town are pretty exuberent when it comes to responses.
Garth’s Goombahs will be there to greet and make everyone welcome with blankets and baseball bats.

Tory promise undermined by ‘taking out the trash’

“In the White House, this sneaky communications strategy is called taking out the trash. In the Alberta legislature, it used to be called bundling. Either name has the same intent — dump bad news on the eve of a summer long weekend in sufficiently large volumes so that scarce reporters on tight deadlines are too swamped to do their jobs properly.
For that reason, if nothing else, Friday’s federal hijinks rate a review after three stinkers were slipped into the Dumpster within an hour of each other.
[1]The Bernier affair, [2]a quiet rule-change setting up the Canadian Wheat Board for an international advertising blitz aimed at ending its marketing monopoly, [3]and a government-appointed advisory panel’s jaded look at the Conservatives’ climate change plan were all released around the dinner hour last Friday”.

Megapundit: Apology, catastrophe
Chris Selley August 6th, 2008 1:24 pm
http://blog.macleans.ca/2008/08/06/megapundit-apology-catastrophe/
As of today I have received 3 of these cheap, poorly photocopied so called 10%ers in the passed week in my mail box.
First, there is no address and no stamp to indicate that it was in fact mailed out on free franking priveleges.
Second, there are often flyers sent out via low paid delivery people via promotions peddlers so I have no idea if in fact these were delivered my the Canada Post Person. Canada Post also does contract to deliver cheap flyers and advert materials from any firm willing to pay for bulk mailers.
Third, all three are from my MP in the Conservative caucus and contain the phony partial ballot that includes Ms. Elizabeth May and excludes Mr. Gilles Duceppe. This is a deliberate slight, no doubt. Also this ballot implies that the four candidates shown are in the same riding which all know is also not true.
Finally, todays blurb’s third statement is [check mark] Standing upfor security and human rights around the world.
-in hind sight that is far from the case in several cases:
= the treatment of Brenda Martin was permitted to go on without proper support from this gov’t for over 2 years
= Omar Kadhr has been detained under less than Geneva Convention Rights Standards for over 5 years
= 2 Canadian brothers detained in Saudi Arabia under murder charges without proper gov’t representation and intervention
= several Canadians murdered in Mexico in separate incidents have not been properly represented by our gov’t.
= genocide occurrences in both Darfur and Zimbabwe are ignored by this government
= Canadian citizens charged with murder in the USA are not given access to Cdn. Gov’t assistance and legal advice
It would be logical to conclude that this government does not understand the meaning of Canadian Citizenship and the responsibilities of the government to assist its citizens abroad. In Brenda Martin’s case they sent/contracted 2 commercial trade lawyers to intervene on her behalf when they had no expertise in either Mexican Criminal Law or International Treaty Human Rights.
I have been lied to by smarter people than these ammature rookies and figured it out. In my opinion Colin Carrie ought to save his deposit money next election and return to full time chiaropractic practice.

Here you go:
You are invited to join MP Garth Turner
and Liberal leader Stephane Dion,
for a special evening, as our guest
Federal Liberal leader Stephane Dion is coming August 20th, to meet the people. Hosted by MP Garth Turner, Dion will be centre stage at an important Town hall meeting in which citizens can ask him about the big issues facing southern Ontario, and Canada.
“Now that Stephen Harper has threatened an election in a few months,” Turner says, “it’s key that people know where our leaders stand. Stephane Dion is the only one making this effort to get out and ask us all what kind of Canada we want, and how best to cope with the problems which need urgent solutions. I’m encouraging everyone – Liberal supporters or critics – to come and make up their own minds.”
Turner cites recent job losses in the manufacturing sector as a priority, along with rising energy costs, falling real estate values and mounting family financial stress. He also says Dion will be outlining his Green Shift proposal, which would see personal income taxes slashed, and taxes imposed instead on polluters responsible in part for climate change.
“Dion has won the admiration of people across the country for meeting real voters face-to-face,” Turner says. “He’s not afraid of the tough questions we should all be asking of our politicians, now that the economy’s turned sour and the federal government seems to be drifting. This is a chance for everyone in the region to get out and make their voices heard, so policy in Ottawa can better mirror public wishes.”

I just checked out the Blogging Tories site! Talk about severe ADD! Sheesh, they have more wacko fears than a mouse in room full of cats!
Man, I have got to get some stock in a pharmaceutical company FAST! After the total anihilation of CRAP we will make millions!

Canadians in general. David Suzuki and scientists who insist on facts. Strongly, dislikes the working poor and all welfare recipients.
Gilles Duceppe, Jack Layton and Elizabeth May.
Strongly dislikes Stephane Dion as he never defeats the government when the King of Hypocrisy has anointed an election.
Did you notice I did this in the masculine?
The ladies are kept in their place.
BTW no offense to the Boy Scouts of Canada – it is a great institution.
I think you’re a beagle. — Garth
By Marc on 08.06.08 5:57 pm
NO! No! No!!!
Beagles are:
“A sturdy hound, conveying the impression of quality without coarseness. A merry hound whose essential function is to hunt,by following a scent. Bold, with great activity, stamina and determination. Alert, intelligent, and of even temperament. Amiable and showing no aggression or timidity.” AKC definition
I have yet to see this poster show much of these laudable attributes.
Please do not insult my wonderful 4-legged companion! I know you will understand…
(smile)
I was wondering why, that I could read the liberal Green Shift plan but nowhere to be found was the governments plan although I had seen John Baird on Mike Duffy’s show with a binder supposedly containing the government’s green plan. I now know why. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20080806.AIR06/TPStory/TPNational/Politics/
Charles,Charles Charles !
Still ROTFLMAO at your list . Too funny .
You Pyoter and Bill M. ,have the best most warped sense of humours on this site.
And I mean warped in the nicest possible way .
Hairy would shit a brick if a hearse showed up to deliver him to the boss .
I remeber the post . Paraphrasing ” I’ll send a car . Or in your case a
bus ” As in something I can throw you under .
Thanks guys for the daily grins .

So seen as I have shown some of the laudable attributes, just not much there might be some hope for me still?
Any uninvited email is spam Garth and that includes your invitation which I received. So now you are a spammer. Feel good does it.

By Jim Goodwin on 08.06.08 6:30 pm
As you know Jim, the CPC has no plan but they also know that if Obama gets in, they will be facing a tax on imports of our oil and therefore Harper has no choice but to impose one first. He has suggested $65 a tonne without any relief for the taxpayers which makes Dion’s plan look pretty good. But knowing the arrogance and incompetence of this lot, they will probably wait until it is too late and will be sending Canadian’s tax dollars to the U.S. Treasury, much like they did with the softwood lumber file when they sold out Canada’s forest industry and gave Bushie 1 billion for his slush find. Maybe part of that could be coming back for the next campaign, stranger things have happened!!!
By Jim Goodwin on 08.06.08 6:30 pm
Thanks Jim. Gee, with all those groups speaking for Canadians, what do we need 308 MP’s spending our hard earned money for?
Oh, yeah, I forgot, to make childish sounds and hoorahs for their fearless leader during QP!
By maybe Rhino? on 08.06.08 6:23 pm
Personally, I prefer an English Fox Hound over a Beagle. Very similar, but the Fox Hound is smarter in many respects.
If the US is almost out of (economic) gas, how behind can we be? Especially as Canada is spending $100 mln. / month on fighting a pointless war.
Tory times are excessively hard times, until they go down in flames, so VOTE THEM OUT FOREVER!

This is the ‘official’ UK inflation rate from the msm; taking hidden inflation into account, it should be roughly 18-25%.
Foreclosures are up 40% in the UK over the last few months . . .

Ahhhh sooooo
Don’t forget the Harrier – the “in between hound” – bigger than beagle; smaller than fox hound. And, of course, the ground hugging basset!
All so similar; all so different…
Inflation Lies?
Do governments fudge the truth?

That reminds me of the experiment the Illinois Department of Natural Resources tried in Lake Michigan. They wanted to create the ideal game fish so they crossed a Coho Salmon with a Walleye Pike, then crossbred that with a Muskie. They called it the Cowalski, but they were so inbred they all drowned!
BTW, to me a ‘Harrier’ will always be the most excellent ‘Jump Jet’ the Marines use. Thanks to Hawker-Sidley’s brillant engineers and the Rolls-Royce Pegasus engine!
By HARRY S on 08.06.08 5:29 pm
6000 x $115 = $690,000
Yup … that’s what it will take for Dion to discharge his debt … 6000 Liberals giving $115 each (or 1000 Liberals giving him $690).
The first is logistically improbable and the second is highly unlikely. So what is Dion going to do?
Nothing much !!!!
He’s going to just sit on the debt and possibly sit on the Liberal party until something gives … looks grim …!!!!
What does this have to do with the thread? Let’s talk about the Conservative carbon plan. — Garth
By maybe Rhino? on 08.06.08 8:28 pm
A Bassett is what happens when you cross breed a Chihuahua with Beagle. The proper portion for a family size Chimichanga!
Nevertheless, Droopy was rather entertaining.
Men with Hats,
you can always tell a “Conservative”, but you can’t tell him much.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And you might be a Red Neck if……..
Garth, I much prefer Woody Allen’s analogy “toilet trained at gunpoint” to describe Conservatives over you calling them beagles.
I personally love our sweet ol girl. My son got Jewels in 1998 and she was 6 months old then. He thought she might be good for hunting rabbits but she flunked puppy kindergarten. Then the first time he took her hunting, she ran away from the sound of the gunshot. But she has been the most loyal, most fun dog. Can’t say as that describes a conservative.
Maybe you’ve got dogs on the brain. After the election, it might be time for you to find your next best friend. We love beagles here so I’d recommend them although I can tell your preference is for a husky breed.
Thanks guys for the daily grins .

Harry wanted to show us he knows how to divide. Well…only in mathematics, Harry. It won’t work here.
Also, he can’t defend the Conservative carbon plan, nor its ethics, nor its handling of the economy…so he continually bashes and trashes. It’s all he’s got.

You damn right I Do. All I can say to the balance of your arrogant comment is to sat to that Spammers are the scum of the internet world and you wear it well.
Garth,
Unfortunately, I had already booked a holiday to PEI between August 19th and 26th. Thank you so much for the invitation to meet Stephane, but have to pass on this occasion.
I replied to Esther that I would be glad to help make up quality graphics for handouts or producing newsletters which I humbly believe that I excel doing. I sent her a URL of samples of my work that I’m volunteering to do for you gratis.
Wish I could attend, but cannot change my plans at this late date. Feel free to use my private e-mail address to reply whether you’d like my help to produce one-page flyers, and/or fulfill more extensive desktop publishing requirements that the meeting or ones in the future may entail.
Garth,
Dion IS a rock star, just ask my kids!
Were it not for the fact that we have to be out of the area on university arrangements for one of them, we’d be there with bells on. Having heard Stéphane and having had the honour of shaking his hand last fall, all I can say is those attending are in for a refreshing treat…you will meet a forward-thinking man of honour, respect, humility, strength and decency. Quel change!
